Tribute: Joe Kious • Handshakes and Handmades

Hey Coop... I was so shocked, and then just really down when I saw Paul's post about Joe's accident.. When you collect awhile, you slowly find out through other makers, dealers, and fellow collectors who the "quality" men are... Guys like Joe Kious, Billy Mace Imel, Buster Warenski, Dwight Towell, and D'Holder, Jim Small and many, many others we all know.. Solid guys, with good manners and strong work ethic... I don't know any of the men I just mentioned, but I feel as if I do..

I happen to have several of Joe's knives, but this pair of small gents folders are so special to me because they used to be owned by another maker who belongs on anyone's list of fine men, and skilled knife builder, Kelly Carlson...

To Paul, and Coop, and all the others on BF who had a personal friendship with Joe, you have my deepest sympathies...

I was thinking that besides Joe himself, and possibly his wife or children, that Jim Cooper has held and admired more of Joe's knives than anyone alive... Richard Slaughter

Thanks Coop.

Just got back from Larry Fuegen's, we talked about Joe a lot these last couple days.

So sad.

Best Regards,

Thank you Jim. Unfortunately for me I have never met Joe, but I know through these remeberances he was a maker and person I would have been proud to know. My sympathies to his family and friends.

Joe's Memorial service was this afternoon in Hunt, Texas. Joe and the family had many friends so it was really well attended and a beautiful service. Some very familiar faces in the sanctuary…..Warren Osborne, Tom Overynder, Bill Ruple, Jerry Halfrich and Jan, and three or four makers that I met for the first time today.

Sandy, Joe's wife made mention of how pleased she was with the display of respect and good memories shared here on Blade Forums.

Had seen the pocket lockets previously, but didn't connect the name to the knife. Truly a prolific legacy.

Sad to lose a master Craftsman. Seems an endangered species sometimes. This community certainly gives hope though.

Everyone: Thank you ALL. But I am only a well-meaning messenger, and simply had at my disposal many images to bring him to life.

Rich: Great post. Thank you. Many good makers we have befriended and lost. :(

Paul: The largest source of my Kious work was Paul Shindler (Knife Legends), who flew out to the memorial service too. I hope you saw him?

I've never met Sandy (I don't think), but I'm pleased that this put a smile on her face. :)
