Is it my imagination or are even the villagers getting better looking? It almost seems like the HIs are becoming art knives and the villagers are coming closer to the old HI standards.

Either that or I have a bad case of Khukuri envy.

:
Perhaps the reputation of BirGhorka is spreading among the village kamis?

Or perhaps the kamis are learning that their khukuri's are being sold
out of the country and it's a matter of National pride?

I doubt that the kamis are any different shop people than the shop people I worked with and we talked.

Everyone knew pretty much which shops were the best ones to work in and that didn't just include the local shops either.
And being in a unique position, because there really aren't "that" many Automatic Screw Machine Shops in the Lower 48 and it wasn't unusual to meet someone from Missouri working in Arkansas and then later moving to So Cal and meeting someone else that either knew or "knew of" your buddy you met in Arkansas.
And not only that, but your personal reputation many times followed you along.
I was working in a small shop here and we were having some machine trouble with one of the new Brown & Sharpe turning centers and a couple of factory guys came down to work on them.
One of the guys, Mike, had heard of me from someone in So Cal and told me that I would/could have a job with the factory anytime I wanted one if I wanted to move north. I was sure glad they hadn't "heard of" me when I was younger.

It's truly a "small" world.

Ron I did the Acmes to.
I setup, operated, worked on (heavily), did layouts for B&S,BSAs, Acmes, Warner Swazeys, Davenports, New Britians, Clevelands, Tornos & Bechler Swiss machines and out of all of them prefered the Wickmans made in England most of all.

A 2 7/8" and 1 3/4" Wickmans were what finally messed my back up.
The 2 7/8" was what started my back trouble. The 1 3/4" finished me off. I was fitting and changeing out new pickoff and back boring cams on it. When I was holding the index gear in my left arm trying to stab the shaft through it by myself is when I heard and felt something go badly wrong in my low back.
I got the dayumed thing in though and then when I started walking to go set and rest a few minutes was when I first felt and experienced the buckling to the floor pain down my left leg.

I miss all the free time I had to work on the government project knives.

You have experience on a lot more different machines than I do, that is an impressive resume you have!

It's amazing to me how funny life is. I spent from '79 to '89 running either 5 1/4" 6 spindle Acmes or Kingsbury dial index machines and tore up my back also. I miss working on the machines and I still keep my rollaway at work now that I'm in the office.

I wonder how many people can get thru a life of factory work without incuring a lifelong injury, it can't be many from what I've seen.
A friend at work was telling me that there is a new surgery for replacing disks that is an alternative to fusion, I haven't had any surgery on my back yet and I'm hoping it proves out.

Oh, well, I guess this is pretty off topic, but it always interests me to find common experiences among the people I meet.

:
I haven't met ayone yet that hasn't had some disorder or the other from a lifetime of work Bro.

Ron please send me a e-mail and I will fill you in on some things if you wish.

I had 35 years of experience and worked several places in Oklahoma and a couple in So Cal and then one in Oregon.
ASM's took good care of me and my family when other people couldn't beg a job.
An even with the medical problems I can't complain. It could have been a lot worse, I know of some that were killed working in the shops!!!
