Tricks.

Actually, diatoms are very special algae and their silica "shells" are coming in a huge diversity of shapes and sizes. (Do look at them under a good microscope if you have a chance!) However, most commercially used deposits will be of limited diversity and I guess that any existing differences won't affect polishing.

I haven't checked it but I guess the name is diatomaceous earth.

Well, if it works, great.

The tripoli compound I use is coarser than jeweler's rouge, cuts faster and leaves a coarser finish.
