Tried Tip down carry today

IMO no matter how you carry always place the blade against a pocket seam to help minimize this type of accident. I carry both ways based on whatever is lower profile, either RFP(tip up) or RRP(tip down), with no problems no matter what I am doing.

I think most people who hear 'tip down' carry dont take this into account. Always put the blade against the seam, and you wont have any problems. Personally, when i'm doing tip down, its either in my back pocket, or on the upper portion of my front pockets, blade against the seam both ways.

I carry that same knife all the time and have never had that happen. That being said if tip down is not for you then it's not for you.

Update: I checked my knives and the 0350 was my only assisted opening knife with the clip set for tip down carry. I changed the clip this morning so it's now tip up against the outside of my pocket. I guess I need to pay closer attention that tip up is not just an opinion, it's safer for assisted opening knives. :foot::foot::uncomfortableness:

Having the blade against the seam is certainly safer. I used it this way because I felt like I had better access to opening it when pulling out of pocket.

I don't worry about it. I carry them the way they come from the factory. Glad you heard it open and didn't bend down and get stuck.

My knives come in a variety of tip-up or tip-down configurations. I have had a tip-up knife open about a quarter inch in my pocket and stab me in my thumb when I reached down to draw it.

Mostly, I don't care any more, but I prefer tip-down, especially with a knife that has a Spyderhole for the thumb. It's a lot easier for me to use the Spyder flip on a tip-down knife. I like flippers tip-down, too, but I usually don't change them if they come tip-up. Tip-down just seems more natural, like carrying a pistol barrel down, rather than barrel up.

Question..... tip up or tip down.... with a folder with the tip folded into the handle. If you wear it where the tip would fold down into your pocket, is that tip up or tip down.

Tip up and tip down are references to the direction the blade is pointing while clipped to your pocket. If the pocket clip is up near the pivot then it is tip down. If the clip is by the butt end (where the lanyard hole is usually located) it is tip up.

Tip up can inadvertently open when you pull out your knife and the thumb stud catches on your pants, like a wave feature. So care is warranted either way. I own both and have never had a problem.

I had an American Lawman that did that a couple of times. Thankfully I never got bit that way and that was the only knife in which that situation occurred.

I'm really surprised how many of you are tip up carriers. I'm not sure how it's more "logical" either.
I have six assisted openers and none of them have any other option but tip down. To me all knives were tip down until around five years ago. Of all my knives only the last three have come tip up and have the option to move the clip. I only left two of 'em tip up for separate reasons. My Spyderco Lum is small and when I stick my thumb in my pocket it's right on the thumb hole. My Spyderco Szabo came tip up and I left it to try one of the new fangled braided lanyards on it. I'm getting used to it but I have to press it against my hip to slide it's large frame up my Palm so as to position my thumb on the opening hole.
Had to switch to tip down on my Spyderco Navaha cuz it was driving me crazy. It is longer than the Lum. In order to reach the opening hole I had to make it tip down. I did get to buy a new torx set in order to move the clip. Score.

I wouldn't really call either way more logical than the other. It is all about personal preference. It depends on the knife and the actual hand that is pulling it out of the pocket.

Can't wave out a knife tip down.:D

It's fun and can be handy. May not appeal to everyone but diversity is one of the great aspects of this hobby.

Blade spine against the pocket seam whether tip up or tip down carry. Problem solved.

There was no problem to be solved. It's about preferences. :stupid:

I'd say the knife blade sticking up out of the pocket was a problem, otherwise, why bother to post about it? Mount the clip so that the blade spine is against the pocket seam. Problem solved.

I had this same exact thing happen to me with a kershaw chive, except I didn't hear it click. I bent down to put my shoe on and thought I got bit by some kind of bug. There wasn't any serious damage, but I will never carry an assisted knife again, tip up, tip down, tip sideways, I don't care...never again.

Flippers FTW:thumbup:

I'm still confused. Sorry. I will give you an example with a Cold Steel Tuff Lite..... the clip is on the pivet end of the knife versus butt end (where a lanyand hole might be). Clipped to your pocket, the closed "tip" is down, but if you could actually open the knife while still clipped to your pocket, it would be sticking straight up toward your waist like the OP's example. Tip up or Tip down?
