WOW!

just so elegant Jean-louis :)

and Stainless Wootz? don't know that I've ever seen that

Bill

Wootz is just another name for Damascus effectively.

Historical Wootz and Damascus are not the same as what we call Wootz and Damascus today. Modern Woo and Dama are actually pattern welded steel. A stainless wootz just means stainless steel pattern welded.

Now that that is out of the way. GORGEOUS KNIFE. I love it. Beautiful how you framed the handle like that. I have to ask though how effective are these rat tail tang knives. I always worry about them.

One of those makers you just say to yourself "this oughta be good" when you see their name on a thread and *SHOCKER* it always is. Such elegance and attention to detail.

Thank you for your encouragement.
"Lapedog" I use to google translate but I believe you explication is not good.
The Wootz is a crucible steel not a welded steel.
The damascus is welded the wootz is crystallization steel. Is not the same, it's completly différent.
You can search on the net to topic or look my website :

Thank you

Wonderful knife. How stainless wootz compare to carbon steel like 1084 or O1?

Thank you for your encouragement.

Thanks I didn't know anyone was able to recreate it.

Lapedog, I don't think you understand. Jean-Louis makes crucible steel, as many other smiths do.

I thought that no one was able to remake the ancient style wootz or damascus steels today? The ones that showed those patterns of banding from the carbon nanotubes. I know people make crucible steels but from what I read no one had been able to replicate wootz.

So Jean-Louis is saying he made not only crucible wootz steel, but a stainless version of it? If that's true that is flat out amazing.

Having seen and handled a couple of Jean-Louis' Wootz knives at Blade last year I can tell you that they ARE Wootz
And if he says this one is stainless Wootz I'm inclined to take him at his word. Crucible Wootz apparently requires small amounts of carbide formers- usually vanadium I think

Maybe this uses chromium as the carbide former ...

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can comment but all my research indicates that the actual manufacturing technique of ancient ( not pattern welded) wootz/damascus/bulat steel are as if yet unknown to modern metalurgy. There have been many people who claim they "might have" rediscovered the tecnique but nothing definitive.

Once again maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

Perhaps any discussion that's debating Wootz or not Wootz could be done in a more appropriate place than this thread?? Jean-Louis shared an amazing knife he made with steel he made, that's what this thread is about. If Jean-Louis calls it Wootz that's good enough for this thread.

Perhaps you're right. Sorry i was trying to answer billf's question then respond to Jean Louis.
