Trioxane; A Chemical accelerant For Wet Conditions Fire.

Great thread!
Always liked the look of that system.
I've seen the canteens, the cups and the holster(?) holder sheath/pouch all sold separately in an army surplus store here.
But the canteen and cup would not fit in the pouch together.
I don't think any of the three items were real military surplus.

Have never seen the canteen cup stove before though.
So the cup, canteen and cup stove can all be packed together in the pouch?
Does anybody sell the complete unit as a package?

Check out canteenshop.com. He makes videos on youtube under the name canteencorner. He has some nice kits you can get on his site.

Thanks, glad you liked it.

I buy them at a couple of local surplus stores. There they are not sold as a unit but individual parts. However they are all U.S. surplus and fit together. There are definite advantages of living near a town with military installations.

These bars are similar to Hexamine tablets, except in the burn time. One bar will burn for about 7 to 10 minutes at over 14,000 BTUs, which is PLENTY for boiling water. I hardly need 3/4 of one to boil a cup of coffee.
The advantages of this type of man made fuel is that it is extremely light, there isn't any type of liquid to spill, and and works much regardless of age. I have some over 20 years old that burn the same as new ones I've tested of friends. The trick is to put them in a plastic bag or air tight container while storing them. The foil covers aren't 100% air proof, and some of the ones that are left over, out of the air container for a while have the larger purple crystals on them.

Trioxane is also known as triox, 1,3,5-trioxacyclohexane, 1,3,5-trioxane, s-trioxane, s-trixane, sym- trioxane, triformol, trioxymethylene and C3H6O3. GI fuel tabs,Ration Heating, aldeform, formagene, marvosan, and other slang names.

Not to be confused with Esbit, which is made of hexamine

Triox all smashed up, mixed with petroleum jelly, squeezed into cotton balls and vacu packed makes one fast lighting, HOT emergency firestarter

Flare up, Can we say no eye brows:eek: Well till they grew back.LOL.
But it was not me thank goodness LOL but my friend was way more careful the next time he tried any new firestarting and then never put his head over it LOL. I also seen one guy use some type of hairspray :eek:one time and good grief that was scary.

might as well have added gunpowder. yawp!

I've seen hairspray used a few times too. I have started several fires on the farm with WD40 when I was a kid, it's awesome stuff to have around...it's a solvent, a lubricant, a moisture inhibitor, and a good improvised flame throwing accelerant, but adding sparks or flames to the spray stream of any aerosol can has the possibility of being very dangerous . Being older now, and hopefully somewhat wiser,I would not advise it if you have any other way at all and have the time to do so.

The heat tab gives off a CS type effect from the fumes.Sprinkle a packet of salt on the burning bar and the fumes disappear.
A heat tab stuck in a c-rat peanut butter can would burn for a long time.( I doubt however anyone on this forum including me would waste peanut butter!)

Hi all,

Joe you are not kidding LOL.

mistwalker, I have never used WD-40 or the hair spray stuff just seen it done and that was enough LOL

WJC01- Thanks for the tip on the sprinkle of salt. As to the peanut butter deal I would like to see it doen but I am not going to waste any LOL

I've lit aerosol streams before, but purely for entertainment purposes, and then briefly. :D

I'm not sure it's an dangerous as one might think.
There is no oxygen inside the bottle, and the design of the system makes it so that the flame propagating inside and causing an explosion isn't much of a possibility in my opinion.
...though i suppose you might run into serious problems if the nozzle somehow melted...

Putting the can IN a fire though...now that's dangerous...I think Mythbusters did it as a sorta side-note once. KA-BOOM
