Trip report- Camping and Fiddleback's

Some really nice pieces of steel there! Thanks for sharing the pics with us.

To start off I first have to say that there are a lot of pictures; I mean a lot. And to be honest, most of them were just me being artsy… Or at least attempting to be.

This trip ended up being a lot better than I expected. It started out with people dropping right and left—so much so that I seriously doubted that it would even happen. There were a whole host of things that went wrong right up until we got to the campsite, but since everything was great once we arrived I choose not to dwell on the negative.

This is where Monica and I slept.

This is where the “posh” couple slept. ;)

Friday night we didn’t do much more than set up our tents and make a fire. It was already almost dark by the time we arrived and got things set up. Nonetheless, we still managed to stay up until 1 o’clock in the morning. Saturday was a bit more eventful. Monica worked on some homework while Kevin and I worked on a fire.

Kevin started with a Wetterlings (?) axe.

But before long he broke out the machetes to show me their usefulness as a wood prepping tool (I’ve never really used machetes before.).

I am now the proud owner of a Condor Machete thanks to Kevin; and while I’m not real artisan yet I like what it can do.

Once we had our wood prepped Kevin worked on perfecting a Yucca bowdrill. Kristen is a wonderful sport and helps Kevin film all of his projects.

We headed out to Cat’s Rock at about 12:30 p.m. or so. Not the earliest start to the day, but it was nice to just relax for the morning.

Once we got back we worked on a project we’ve been planning for a while. We’re trying to start a Youth Wilderness Adventure Camp and this weekend was our first test run. While we only had one attendee, Clarence, he was enthusiastic and took to Kevin like a baby duck.

Here he is learning the “ins and outs” of trapping.

After doing some more woodworking with various tools we settled down to a fire and some good food.

Sunday morning Monica and I were up early. So I did some wood prep and played around with a new way of laying a fire. It didn’t work quite like I had planned, but I honestly feel that most of that was due to a severe lack of small kindling. Kevin started this fire on the bowdrill though and that’s always fun to watch. I have to admit that I failed miserably at the actual fire starting this weekend. I couldn’t even light fatwood dust with a firesteel…

Here’s a Mimic Fly we had buzzing around our camp.

Here’s Kristen and Kevin taking a picture of a funky bug on Kevin’s shirt. Hopefully, he’ll post up pictures for identification soon.

I just stole these pictures from Monica's Facebook account. Mostly, because I look like I have hair in them... But also because they show our toad friend from Friday and the Bushman5 Nuclear Tinder Fire Pack we lit.

Don't know what that bug was? But here are the pics. That woodsman is just sexy. I'm cutting up fruit with my ladyfinger today to get a patina like yours.

Great pics!

The first bug is a yellow jacket hover fly.
Milesia virginiensis

That second guy is some type ichneumonid wasp, probably in the subfamily Banchinae
