Trip to the ER

Well, I feel like a numb nuts. I was at church. I am in charge of the nursery (18 months to 3 year olds). I was cutting up apples for snack time. I have a lanyard on the end of the knife. I was setting the knife down on the counter, trying to put it toward the back of the table, out of the reach of the little ones. The lanyard cord caught on the edge of the table (I might have leaned against the table at exactly the right time to catch it between my leg and the edge of the table). The knife slid out of my loose grip, and across the thumb.

There was another guy sitting at the table, passing out fishy crackers, I splattered blood all over right in front of him (hopefully I did not get him with any blood), but he got a real close look before I put the paper towels on. He got a bit pale. After two hours of direct pressure waiting at the emergency room, and soaking trough about 15 layers of folded up paper towels, it was still bleeding hard.

I knew immediately that I was going to have to make an er trip. The thumb instantly went numb right above the cut, to the end of the thumb. I bled all over the table reaching to grab some paper towels. A nice doctor from church drove me to the er. The numbing agent is completely worn off now, and the thumb from the knuckle to the tip is still dead.

Good side is that I can still move the thumb, and that the tendon is ok. The numb finger indicates I got a nerve. Hopefully it will get feeling back. I am supposed to go see a hand specialist latter in the week.

Hopefully the feeling comes back, because that is my shooting and chopping hand.

The knife that cut me was not my GW which was still in the bag, It was my hand made knife, which I can attest is very sharp. Makes a great apple slicer/peeler, and thumb cutter.

The offending knife, top one.

That's what I get for not using INFI. The short lanyard on the GW would not have caught, and caused the fuss. I guess I need to trim that long lanyard (I had it long enough to tuck under the belt when I am wearing it, like an anchor. It is also long enough to tuck the knot up under the belt when wearing it in a pocket, and that keeps it upright in the pocket, and keeps it from falling out of the pocket when sitting in the car, or couch etc.

Oops, it is bleeding again, I better go put another layer of gauze on it.

Man, I've seen some bad stitches and cuts, and no matter what, every time I see a new one I just cringe. Hope your nerves get better.

It was really funny though, there were three guys waiting in the er with cuts for stitching. One of them, they called his name and he stood up and fell right in front of me (he said his foot was asleep, but it might have had something to do with the very strong odor of alcohol). I could not catch him, but he was holding a rag on his right hand too.

If I had had my camera at the er I would have told the doc to snap a pic before he started stitching.

It was a nice meaty deep one. After they got the bleeding stopped and numbed up, the doctor started looking inside, and probing with tweezers. He said it was deeper than he was originally thinking. You know it is not a good thing when they are worried that it is you dominant hand.

But we got to talking about knives (when we were talking about how it happened, and how clean the slice was). He said his dad made knives out of files. It was a good conversation.

Hey, at least I don't have to do heavy manual labor tomorrow.

The way you described the incident I could totally see that happening. Your grip on the knife would have been loose because you were just going to place it on a tabe. I have a knife with a lanyard in my lap and went "ouch" when I pretended to let the lanyard catch on the edge of my desk, dragging the razor sharp edge against my lower inner thump. I hope you heal well, and I respect you for the work you do with children. I also have worked in childcare (unfortunately where I live they wouldn't be so keen on me using my own knives to carve up apples for the kids). There was absolutely no irony intended in the previous statement as I really wish I could carry and use my own knives in that environment. The dull knives they give me to cut apples for snack time are potentially much more dangerous. Take care. Uh yah...thumbs up. Sorry didn't consider my use of icons until after the fact. :)

Oh man. I got goose bumps when I scrolled down and saw the pics.

Wishing you a speedy and full recovery.

well, it is nursery at church. Every one is volunteer (they just ask you to teach classes, or be in the nursery, or what ever needs doing). I am also in Scouts on Wednesday night.

I have tried cutting the apples and peeling them up before I go, but the little kids won't eat them because they look yucky when they turn brown. My own little three year old used to be in there until today. Now he is with the next older class up.

Talk about a dumb place to do it though.Blood on the dress shirt (at least I don't wear my good suits to church where the kids can mess them up).

not really. That is pretty young. I was not real excited, and no one was running around like a chicken with their heads cut off.

I was concerned with all the blood on the table, but luckily the kids were not on that end (normally there are 8 or more, but today, there were only three).

One of the other guys came in with clean up spray etc to clean off the table.

On the plus side, you may not be 'requested' to do daycare duties again for a while...

well, I have been in there for over a year now, so that would be nice. Last time my wife and I were in there together. That stint lasted for 3 years I think, so it can be a long while.

This may not make the situation any better but at least it wasn't much worse and one of the kids got hurt.

that would have been terrible. I cut the apples on another table, away from where they sit. It is a higher table, so stuff you put on it is out of reach.

Nice pics, thanks for those though I would have liked a pre stitches shot. Nest time. I can definitely see how that happened. There was a thread about lanyards and their inherent dangers a while back. I bet if you had used infi this would not have happened
