Trip to the ER

I actually just ate some apple too, right after he said that! I was laughing.

Another thing I am noticing, the numb thumb is my "space bar thumb"

Nice pics...I did something similar while slicing cheese with a cleaver. Also did some nerve damage.

Bloodlust aside, that is a cool-looking little knife! What do you call that style of blade?

heal well :-D

Great Pics! Sorry about the wound though. I put 21 stitches in my middle finger with a sharp ax back in the '70s and the severed area was numb for about 5-6 years. No problems now. My tag line on another knife forum; "Wisdom is sudden."

"that is a cool-looking little knife! What do you call that style of blade?"

Graham Brothers make custom knifes with a square blade and a tip sharpened like that. They are much nicer than that home made one. They Call their version the Razel. That is where I got the inspiration.

I call mine "little ugly" It is made of 5160 with a mustard patina. I just finished it before Christmas. All of the shaping and blade bevels etc was done by hand with files. The scales were drilled with a hand crank drill (that is why the holes are not too clean).

I heat treated it in a little grill and tempered it in my oven.

WHOA!!! Now that's a cut, glad the tendon wasn't damaged and hope you get feeling back.

My exGF on her birthday three years ago decided to use one of my kitchen knives to "dig out" a stuck cork on a bottle of wine. She knew full well I was a knife nut and one would think that would equal....uber sharp knives be careful.

I begged her not to do it, and only had my back turned for half a minute or so before I heard "tap tap tap". turned around and there she was not digging but STABBING the top of the cork while holding the bottle with her other hand. Before I could say a word she missed and stabbed the knife all the way into her left hand right behind her index finger big knuckle. She didn't have your luck and did cut the tendon 90%....and it took18months before she could close that finger again. Heck the first 6mon's they kept her in a finger restraint 24hrs a day to let the tendon start to heal so she couldn't accidentally tug it too hard and snap it on her own, LOL

That is what I was worried about. The thumb from the cut up is still completely numb, and all the numbing shot wore off hours and hours ago.

My older brother had a locking knife fold up on his thumb and he had to have surgery on it. He also almost entirely severed the tendon. He was supposed to wear a cast for a while to keep from tearing it the rest of the way and paralyzing it.

Nice Pics! Don't feel bad I have a tab a my Doc for stitches! The last time I severed a tendon in my hand, they operated and it turned out pretty good. Hope you heal up fast!:D

Welcome to the INFI Thumb Club! Kinda like the Garand Thumb, but with stitches.

Ouch..!
Give it time to get the feeling back. I lopped the tip of my thumb off and even when it looked healed it took a good while for the feeling to come back.

I cut a nerve in the thumb many years ago with one of those flat-bladed X-Acto knives. Very deep--straight in.

I had no feeling on one side of the thumb from about the knuckle closest to the wrist all the way to the tip. It remained numb for a very long time---years, in fact.

I got used to it, actually, then one day years later I realized, "hey, I can feel this area again!" Then a few years later, I could feel past the 'first' knuckle ... on and on all the way to the end.

My point: be patient. Nerves can heal very slowly.

OUCH! Hope that heals right up and there's no permanent damage.

But this shows why I don't use lanyards. I don't particularly want a razor-sharp piece of metal hanging in the air, swinging towards me, if I accidentally drop a knife from my grip...

The 'lanyard' statement could be a whole other thread so not to take away from this serious injury I will only say there is a smart way to use a lanyard.

I bet if you had used infi this would not have happened

Yeah, maybe no thumb left!:eek:

Seriously, it looks like your knife did a fine job of slicing. That's one of those situations where you are being careful to make sure the kids are safe and you never think of something like that happening to you. Hope it heals soon with all the feeling back in it.

Nice little knife, too, by the way.

You do niiiiiice work!

Oh and btw - like others have said - the nerves will/do come back - but it does take some time. I cut about a 1/2 in off the tip of one of my fingers with a electric hedge clipper about 4 years ago. Through the bone and just had a thin flap holding her on. The drs put it back together and after being numb for the first year or so, I now can feel again with the tip. It may just take a little time.

Just be happy it was not a NMFBM or the other guy would be handing your thumb to you... or you arm ... or you leg.....:D:thumbup:

I had about that many stitches recently but it was in my neck and cost $15k out of pocket.

Any plans on making more knives? I like that handle and the steel you chose.

Ow ow ow ow ow ow!!

One of my nightmares working with knives everyday like I do, especially the really big really sharp ones!
