Ok, Spark and the rest of you voiced a bunch of concerns and valid ideas. Let's see if I can summarize (and inject my own bias):
1) Requiring a paid (or plaid) membership is OK, but might have a negative impact on the culture of the forum/Cantina.
Bias: Agree with those who have said that it won't stop the behavior of the more persistent as..., sorry, trolls, and the place won't be the same afterwards. See Kismet's post in the other thread if you want to know what I really meant, but didn't know how to say it (as usual).
2) "If we ignore it, it will go away".
Bias: Doesn't work well in real life, but it's the magic bullet here. Create a sticky titled "What to do if you see something that REALLY irritates you". Put in a bunch of hints (deep breathes, walks on the beach, wrestling with a komodo dragon, telling Danny that his face looks like a flying saucer) of what to do in case you're offended by a post. Every other suggestion would be "Let it go, and don't respond". This would be for the newcomers. All of us would (and already do) know, as Spectre says : DFTT (don't feed the trolls).
3) For the rest of us who know better: DFTT. That's what the "Ignore" list is for. Remember: these people ain't real! When I joined (not ALL that long ago), there weren't any trolls. They were mentioned, if at all, as the stuff of legend. We can't go back, but I say again: use the "Ignore" list. They don't know who you really are, they don't matter, their opinion matters even less. When you see someone posting in all lowercase, with bad spelling, in a manner that REALLY pi... er, irritates you, use wonders of technology to run his post into "This message is hidden because (insert your favorite $%^&* name here) is on your ignore list".
Bias: Oh, I guess I just said it.
4) Paid memberhips (hey, you don't think that was the whole reason for Spark's post, do you??): I'm all for them (obiously). If you get something out of this forum, if you stay a while, give a little back.
5) Don't respond. Have I said that already?
Feel free to 'vote'. Thanks for listening.
