Ok, Spark and the rest of you voiced a bunch of concerns and valid ideas. Let's see if I can summarize (and inject my own bias):

1) Requiring a paid (or plaid) membership is OK, but might have a negative impact on the culture of the forum/Cantina.
Bias: Agree with those who have said that it won't stop the behavior of the more persistent as..., sorry, trolls, and the place won't be the same afterwards. See Kismet's post in the other thread if you want to know what I really meant, but didn't know how to say it (as usual).

2) "If we ignore it, it will go away".
Bias: Doesn't work well in real life, but it's the magic bullet here. Create a sticky titled "What to do if you see something that REALLY irritates you". Put in a bunch of hints (deep breathes, walks on the beach, wrestling with a komodo dragon, telling Danny that his face looks like a flying saucer) of what to do in case you're offended by a post. Every other suggestion would be "Let it go, and don't respond". This would be for the newcomers. All of us would (and already do) know, as Spectre says : DFTT (don't feed the trolls).

3) For the rest of us who know better: DFTT. That's what the "Ignore" list is for. Remember: these people ain't real! When I joined (not ALL that long ago), there weren't any trolls. They were mentioned, if at all, as the stuff of legend. We can't go back, but I say again: use the "Ignore" list. They don't know who you really are, they don't matter, their opinion matters even less. When you see someone posting in all lowercase, with bad spelling, in a manner that REALLY pi... er, irritates you, use wonders of technology to run his post into "This message is hidden because (insert your favorite $%^&* name here) is on your ignore list".
Bias: Oh, I guess I just said it.

4) Paid memberhips (hey, you don't think that was the whole reason for Spark's post, do you??): I'm all for them (obiously). If you get something out of this forum, if you stay a while, give a little back.

5) Don't respond. Have I said that already?

Feel free to 'vote'. Thanks for listening.

I added three users to my ignore list earlier today.

Required or not, I'll join up at least at the basic level when my next check comes in. Hell, I've been here, at least a lot of the time, for six years, and there are folks who've been around longer than I have. We can support Kevin a bit, regardless of what trolls do.

I dont mind paying, I just cant right now. Im unemployed for another two weeks!
I would really like the extra stuff you get, like posting pictures and adding snappy lines at the bottom of your posts.
Oh man! Posting pics!
This place will never be the same!

Hey, if someone will pay for me, Ill mail you a bottle of sake.
Ferrous will vouch for the quality of the sake (I hope)

Hey! What was that flying saucer face comment!
Why I oughtta.....Bang! Right to the Moon, Aardvark!

I'll see if I can get that done for you tomorrow Danny. Ferrous will tell you that I like Sake!

Go look at the registration form and email the info needed to me so I can cut & paste it...

Sounds like a plan Aardvark. DFTT seems to be the best policy. Despite his persistence I think this will make him give up eventually.

thank you Nasty.
I know I have your address somewhere.
Tell me, do you like it sweeter or stronger?

Perhaps the best course of action is to track down the troll's address and go pay him a visit. A face to face meeting might influence future behavior.

Just a random thought.....

As appealing as that is, it is something you should take care about suggesting on a the forum, no matter of the intent.
If some random puke mugs this jackass, he's gonna think you paid him a visit :)

A pay site will turn away a lot of new people, this will hurt Bill and this place is really his.

This place is growing and the Khukuri is becoming known to people more every day this site does a lot for that.

The trolls cause you to change they have a control over you and they win plain and simple

I have not seen threads that are that bad when you compare to what other web forums go through.

I am a mod and part of the staff on the world’s largest kung-fu site, we have trolls we deal with them, the site is not only the largest it’s the most respected. Because of the quality of the members and the effort the staff puts into it.

At the risk of being banned , I would like to share my opinion.

I think your all taking yourselves a bit too seriously. From my understanding
this forum is about the promotion of Hi and khuks. I think this is the prime directive here.

If your institute a payment, it will be in essence a private club, which is
your right but it doesn't help Bill, the Kami's or anybody but the "club" in
particular.

You (regular forumites) have also accused me of being a troll,( which I don't consider myself to be) when I first started posting. I don't spell well and I do live my life very different than most, I have done some really strange things in my life and have differing opinions than most. There is also a tendancy to persecute those who just doesn't particulary agree with the consensus. Which doesn't serve the purpose of the forum but does once again serves " the club" . There are quite a few who outright rant and rave (much better lately) , and it is unacceptable to call people on it ( getting a little excited can be expected on certain subjects which we all digress to).

I also conceed that " the club" probably does buy a lot of khuks which is good
for HI, but if it drives away potential customers and the spread of the plague (yes hikv) we all are sworn to spread , that's not a good thing either. I think if burafan buys khuks , he got just as much right as anyone of you have to post what ever foolish he feels like at the moment( as long as it doesn't drive away customers or give wrong impressions), Doesn't mean you don't call him on it , it just means the prime directive is followed.

There is also a very viable point that you maybe creating a few trolls by your actions. I can say myself that when I was accused , it cranked me off severly.
If I was younger, I would have tormented you for the hell of it. ( it amazes me sometime that I have survived my youth).

I think you guys need to lighten up and get a new perspective. There will be trolls and they will be annoying , there are also people who talk on their cell phone when they drive, people who talk in movie theaters and a thousand other things that annoy. We don't shoot them, and I doubt that any of you punch them out either? Well , OK, most of us don't..... well, those that are not actually serving time.... well.......

Being annoyed doesn't give you the right to hijack a forum for your own pesonnal gratification. I think ignoring is the best solutions for all and best for business too.

Having said all of that , $10 and posting picture does sound intriguing,
Follow the prime directive........

DFTT

Somebody start a thread with just that in the title. That will help newbies and irregular types to pick it up. You have to remember that while the recent trolling certainly affected many of us, there are still a bunch of folks who only get on the forum every other day or so at best - that will never know of it.

In the meantime, the Bunker has been opened for further "enlightenment". ;)

brantoken,

I think you bring up some very valid points.

I, like you , am relatively new to the HI forum. I joined in May. I haven't posted to much. Mainly just to ask a few questions and buy a few khukuris. As I "lurked" several months before joining. I believed that this forum was a little freer thinking when a newbie posted a contradictory opinion. I still believe that, even though, when you post something that’s perceived as “attacking” something here. Some of the regular’s answers are to confront you face to face. I guess so they can show how “bad” they are and kick your ass”. I guess I don’t understand the Buddhist philosophy or this forums charter. But as I said above. I’m new so maybe I’ll learn.

My point in this rambling bunch of BS is that any forum, no matter what the subject. Has its “click”. That’s just a fact.
And if you voice a dissenting view from the norm. Your going to get “nailed”.

But I think what matters is, not so much WHAT you say but HOW you say it.
We have no body language here. No faces or expressions. Only words and they are easy to misunderstand. I know I’m guilty of that.

I tend to be a “smart ass” when I talk with people and, as I get older. My tolerance level has dropped off dramatically. Be that as it may. I try to listen to people. Even when I perceive them “attacking” me, verbally. It’s not worth the aggravation.

Anyway. I still like the people here. Even the trolls. I've never met them personally but maybe, someday, I'll have the privilege. I believe that EVERYBODY has something of value to contribute, even if I don’t agree with what it is.
The good thing about a computer is, it DOES have an “OFF” button.
Shut it down, go kiss the wife, hug your babies and take a walk with your dog.
That’s all the nonsense I have to say so ya’ll have a great day.

:) Mark T.

If I , for one, have been a jerk to new guys, I apologize.
Being unkind or unwelcoming is not what a good man does.
I will be more careful in the future.

Lots of good points being brought up, and well put, also.

bran, you're a better man than I: I don't think that EVERYONE has something to contribute, only those that want to. Unless of course, you subscribe to the 'good bad example' theory.

I do think that at times we take ourselves too seriously. I know I do.

seems to me a little entertainment isn't necessary a bad thing either,
It does serve to pass the time between daily special postings..... and boy howdee do people get all excited! It's like watching a soap (got hooked once, my platoon seargent was addicted when I was in The 82d, we got too goof off if we watched too, yeah weird I know) I think it's kinda fun.....

I understand your point but.....

I don't think I said anything about mugging the guy. Just a face to face meeting to come to an understanding. With out the security of a keyboard and screen, reason may prevail.

Another random thought.....

I believe you recieved ample apology. If not, let me do so yet again- I'm sorry if you were thought to be a troll and treated other than graciously. I'm sorry that I assisted this process. If I recall, you arrived at a time of upheavel similar to now. I think you are entitled to your opinion, but this, "I would have tormented you for the hell of it." says much. What was that about taking oneself too seriously??!! And the qualifier that you would have done so if young is a cop-out. What you mean is that you could if you wanna. You would be, 'justified'. Fine. Not with me, though, or with many others.

And the idea that we create trolls by our attitude is exactly like the attractive woman raped because she wore revealing clothing- it is nonsense.

However, we do agree on one thing, and that is :

"think you guys need to lighten up and get a new perspective. There will be trolls and they will be annoying , there are also people who talk on their cell phone when they drive, people who talk in movie theaters and a thousand other things that annoy. We don't shoot them, and I doubt that any of you punch them out either" Brantoken

I think that is spot-on. Fighting a troll is like asking for egg on one's face forever. Who has the most time to devote to mischief? The Troll. Who can cause more trouble? The Troll.

Brantoken, look at this; you've been accepted a long time, doesn't that make it more than time to let it go?
