Trolling for Schrades

I confess that the past few days I have been trolling for Schrades. They lurk in dense cover, behind counters, in sawdust covered cases, and even on evilbay. I just "won" a couple of fixed blade Old Timers there. K-Mart still has a few sharpfingers in blisterpacks. Wal-Mart has a few folders under the counter.

I live in a rural area outside a small Tennessee town, with other small towns dotted all around me. The Ace Hardware only carrys Case and Chinese. The Do-It-Center only has the Chinese. But a small mom and pop grocery that some years back was a Freds had a few stashed under the counter beneath their Case display. I nabbed two Schrades for the old Fred's price tag, $10.00 each. One was a large yellow single blade, the other a roadie.

Every one of these towns has it's own lumber company, and Buck's had a huge Case display. Stuck in the lower corner was a tiny old stock Old Timer. $12 for that one.

I'll make a trip back to Bucks because on top of that Case display was a dusty Schrade Ducks unlimited display with only the upper right knife sold from it. I hope they will make me a deal on the whole shooting match! Then in the middle of the case behind some #3 forever tins was a sharpfinger with the sillouette of a duck laser cut out. It was in a fancy case, but I couldn't see it too well through all the sawdust on the glass, and didn't want to wipe it off and let other folks see it. What was it? Any guesses? Another DU issue? Duck stamp issue?

Smokey Mountain's latest catalog shows one on the last pages as a 2001/2002 DU. Just as LT said!

Sears has 'em on clearance as well. Quite a few depending on the store.

One of my favorite ways to find older knives, sometimes at a good price, is to stop by any old, old hardware store (those great old ones, not the ones with 'Ace' on the storefront) and prospect for knives. The owner might accept any amount for a knife that he bought from a wholesaler 20 years ago and no one had paid any attention to. You just might get a deal on the display you mentioned.

Home Depot is slowly lowering the prices of the few Scrade models it carries. I got several big saw cut delrin 6OT lockbacks the other day for $10 each. We're talking a knife that I would compare favorably to a Buck 110 at a fraction of the price.

What's anyone else found?

A local pawn shop / knife dealer (aren't they all?) has a Bear Paw NIB with case and papers, 19.95 on the box but will take 17.00 even for it. It does have a bit of verdigris on the brass from storage, but is this a good deal? I don't have a collector knife value book, and haven't found values on the web yet.

On the DU152, Smokey does show that one as the 2001-2002, but a seller on ebay lists one as being a duck stamp issue.... surely he wouldn't misadvertize his product? ;)

I picked one up today at a local antique/junk shop. SC505, it's basicially a 8OT. Instead of the regular drown delrin this one has off white delrin scales and silver pins instead of brass. Brass liners, carbon steel blades it's a 80T in everyway except for the scales and pins. One of the scales has a picture of a couple of pheasants flying and a logo for FUNK's HYBRID which come to find out is a type of corn seed.. Imagine that here in Kansas. :D Anyway I thought it was a great find. Brought it home and cleaned it up a little sharpened it and dropped it in my pocket. Fun fun. Later, Jim

Some can be found alone, some came with a duckstamp money clip in a wooden lasered box. Some were in a small display case with some other models for the year. LT

I just got in today's mail a beautiful older Schrade that I won on Ebay...a Schrade Walden junior cattle pattern...about 3-3/8" long...nice thick blade stock/backsprings with tremendous snap....beautiful and flawless green peachseed bone handles.....near mint, just some specks and tarnish on the fine carbon steel blades.....

I thought I did good at $60......I just love the older bone handle Schrades...

Sounds nice Knifeaholic, congrats. Would love to see a picture if not to much trouble.

I was in a hardware store on a business trip yesterday and paused to look at the knives. I wound up taking this 15OT Old Timer home to be a big brother to the 162UH on the bottom. Wallet's $43 lighter, but I'm happy. :)

And well you should be! That is a nice knife, and below the last retail price if I remember right! Good find! Were there TWO there? :)

Nope, only one I'm sorry to say (I have two sons and watch for things that I can pic up in pairs or 3's. I checked eBay and one with a box (which this didn't have - it was the display) went for $66, so I'm plenty content. I'm traveling again tomorrow and hoping I'll have time to check out a few more shops.

Why are the Schrades being clearanced?

AI haven't been keeping up with the knife news too much lately...is something changeing?

Yep. The complete history of Schrade and knifemaking have changed. Schrade closed their doors. Today was the last day of the auction at the factory, where they auctioned off all (most) of their assets. That's the reason for the big scramble that you'll be hearing about to scoop up what's out there before prices get boosted. Sad sad day!!

There are still some real bargins out there. Unfortunately, it's almost always someone else who finds them.

However, this week it was my turn. I found a 152OT Sharp Finger, HC, with box and papers at a local hardware store. Originally priced at $ 29.98 it had been marked down to $23.99.......plus there was a big sign behind the counter reading:

"ALL OLD-TIMERS AND UNCLE HENRYS HALF PRICE"

Yep, I picked up the 152OT NIB for $11.99!!!

I'm the guy who NEVER wins anything. If I got lucky, who knows whose turn it will be next!

Good hunting.......

Wow! Congrats!! That is a great deal! I know this has been mentioned, but if you're hunting for Schrades, the best places to go are those little "Mom & Pop" shops off the beaten path. The older tackle shops, hunting and fishing stores that are privately owned and the counter is still manned by the owner or another family member. I have talked to hundreds and hundreds of people over the years who have found "buried treasure". These little places end up with one of this and one of that after the line is discontinued, and they stick it away in their stockrooms and forget about them. If you ask them to check in their stockrooms, they usually don't mind doing that. I've known people who have ended up with the $1,000 Schrade Gold inlayed 75th Anniversary knife and other limited edition treasures from these places. One knife that keeps turning up again and again is the 15OT Deerslayer. Unfortunately, because word is getting out that Schrade is closed, they'll probably all be digging these treasures back out and up-pricing them. E-Bay is always a good bet too. Good luck and happy hunting!
