I happened to be studying for my 6th kyu test when my wife and I seperated, back in '96.
Well, the weapon for the belt was the kusarifundo weighted chain. Tore up quite a few dead trees the months before the test. Good practice, and I'm sure it helped keep me sane.
Oh, yeah- I passed the belt test pretty easily!
