Trophy Hunting Banned in Parts of Africa...leading to problems for locals

Have any of you anti-hunting folks ever heard of "bushmeat? People in sub-Saharan Africa hunt and eat all kinds of stuff. Most of the carcasses of animals killed by big game hunters are eaten. Some of that meat, like that of an eland, would be considered gourmet meat in the West, akin to elk. What that means is the locals get a zero-risk free meal in addition to some of them being paid and tipped handsomely by local standards.

I have no problem with:

1. Hunting
2. Eating what you kill
3. Not eating what you kill
4. Getting a trophy

It all depends on the situation. I think every single wild pig in the US should be killed, whether they are eaten or not. They are destroying our wild areas and are NOT indigenous.

All this ruckus over a lion is idiotic, and shows how pampered and spoiled the US has become.

Doug C, one very famous tiger hunter in India was Jim Corbett. Google that , and interesting hunter and there is a national park named after him there.

For Africa --a lion is a preditor , a carnivore , who eats wild animals, domestic animals , and PEOPLE .Do you think that natives really care about a dead lion ? NO they are happy !

I'm a believer in "leave things in better shape than they were when you got them".

Conservation and a level headed debate is the name of the game.

If you mess with the predator / prey ratio you need to manage wildlife populations to prevent overgrazing and over-predation. Same thing if you introduce new species to an area with no natural predators. Some sort of boundaries between the animal kingdom and human settlements need to be enforced. As you can see in the article posted in the first post of this thread. Good fences make good neighbors and all that. You can''t have animals destroying crops and hurting people. Neither can you have people transforming all the wild places into strip malls and palm oil plantations.

When harvesting meat try to emulate natural selection. Your bullets echo through the generations so don't just harvest the strongest prettiest males. That removes them from the gene pool thus weakening the herd. Having a skewed gender distribution can also create problems with inbreeding. Do not kill the elephant matriarch that the whole herd is relying on to find the next watering hole.

Don't kill endangered species for boner pills and fraudulent folk remedies.

The most important and perhaps least discussed conservation measure is the human population itself... assuming we can get past all the knee jerk reactions preventing us from even having such a debate. That 6th crack addicted welfare baby with low IQ and a laundry list of health problems isn't doing itself or anyone else any good. Of course you can't say that in polite company and I'm digressing.

So yeah... go right ahead. Nothing wrong with hunting responsibly. All living creates are born into this world and eventually they die. A lot of plants and animals died for us to be having this debate. That is true even for people whose finances have allowed them to distance themselves from much of the mess.
