Trouble getting my final edge on the blade

I like to set the bevel on a big atoma 140 grit diamond plate. It works pretty quick but not so fast that you cant correct mistakes. Then you can use progressively finer stones to get the edge where you want.

Out of curiosity I bought one of the Edge Pro style sharpeners. I replaced the cheap stones with better stones. For less then $50 for the machine and the new stones you can have a great set up.

This literally puts on the most precise and sharpest edge I have ever seen. It really is amazing.

I tried to set up my articulating work rest from Northridge so I could sharpen edge down and it was kind of tight and I did not have a lot of room between the work rest and platen. Even with it edge down it kept grabbing the blade and throwing it down. Confused and scared the crap out of me! I'll try the 30-40 micron mylar belts. What brand and where do you buy them at? Many thanks!
in my opinion:
the best final grind is not a grind at all but rather a hone on a stone, starting with coarse then progressing to a good arkansass and finally with a fine translucent arkansass
yes it is a lot of work but the edge look ad keenness is unbeatable as long as you have a steady STRONG hand (and no doubt you do)

Just curious how you found an edgepro apex for $50!? Cheapest I have found is $165

Also what stones did you end up using? Edm?

Edge Pro patent ran out years ago, so now there are many on the market in that style. Watch that video I put up. He goes over it. I shows the congress stones in the video and they are great and not expensive.

I made a few tweaks like adding a magnet and mounting to a board for a base as well as putting a spring on the guide rod to hold the stones.

The machine cost $20 and the stones about $28 .

If anyone has $200 they want to spend on a system I would go with the Hapstone from Gritomatic. That is a great set up for $200
