Trouble viewing images

I think you'll find a hard time attracting more paying members if "potential" paying members can't see ANY of the pictures that are posted here. I certainly won't.

i concur with cougar....it would be best if viewing images is turned on for all

i paid for a renewal to support this site .... because i have enjoyed it for years....maybe i will post some images but do not plan to sell.

if i was a maker/dealer/member who paid for a memebership with the desire to sell/advertise, the inability to show off my wares to the vast majority off users (and potential customers) would be a major negative

I get the message when I try to view attachments, too:
Chiro75, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

Seems to me being able to upload images directly to the Bladeforums servers is an important perk of paying members. People have told me that's what they signed up for. If most of the members can't see those images, that devalues the privilege of uploading them.... I'm afraid a lot of people will invest in an image host somewhere else on the net instead of in a Bladeforums membership.

And what of the KnifeMakers who pay so that they can sell their wares? You're cutting a large segment of their potential customers off from seeing the goods they might purchase.

I agree with Cougar. I still can't see images and I logged out and logged back in.

I've no doubt that Spark will correct this glitch quickly. ;)

Its still not working.
FYI I was going to become a gold member a couple weeks ago but the cash I was going to use was in Pay Pal and there is no way to pay with Pay Pal.Also if basic members can't view pics I am not sure I would want to become gold.

Just to jump in here, I can't view attachments either. Which caught me kind of off guard because ever since becoming a member I've been able to and then just out of no where I try to look at a maker's knife in the knife maker forum and it wouldn't let me.

Was there an announcement made about this change? If there was perhaps I just missed it.

It seems to be the general feeling but I'll add my opinion too. What is the point of turning off images for non paying members? I don't think it is really going to reel more people in, just make people upset. People come here for the wealth of knowledge and that includes pictures. Turning off pictures for everyone just hurts the overall atmosphere of the bladeforums.

i have a agree 100percent on this i was thinking of buying a knifemakers membership but if i stand to lose ppl seeing my wears i dont think i will buy one also if i cannot see pics then how am i to buy something i like

If anything you're hurting yourself. I was considering getting a Gold membership as soon as I get a digicam, whenever that is, but I'm not as motivated to now. What good are photo privileges if I can't show them off?

Normally, when I post pics, I expect everyone that can veiw and read the post, to be able to veiw the pics I post. I'm a Gold member, but if I was just a Registered member, I'd be a bit upset if suddenly things I used to be able to see, ie: knives I was thinking of buying, I couldn't look at anymore. Spark, you could be hurting yourself here, the Knifemaker and Dealer memberships are dependant upon ALL members being able to view their wares. You cut some of their potential customers, and there is a possibility that they may not renew their membership. That in turn relates to less money going into upkeep here. If you are going to turn off veiwing of pics, then I would suggest turning of the ability of unregestered persons to view. Give the unregistered lurkers a reason to register. As I understand things now, Registered members can't see attachments, unless they log out, clear their cookie cache, and can then veiw most pics without logging in. Or, can see a few pics after logging back in, but then that goes away after viewing a few pics.

Five days after my initial post in this thread and I STILL am being blocked from viewing images. I agree with Bill Sanders' post BTW. If your gonna ban pic viewing, do it to the unregistered lurkers. Seems to me this is gonna start to hurt the working makers who pay to sell on this forum. Makes little sense to me from a business perspective.

I agree with the general consensus here. I was planning to purchase a gold membership within the month, but this restriction on viewing images is bothering me. I feel that there's already sufficient motivation to upgrade to a paying membership without limiting the ability of non-paying users to view pictures.

If there have to be restrictions in place, why not impose them on users who aren't logged in? That would cut down on bandwidth costs while still permitting registered users to view images of the knives they are thinking of buying.

My knifemakers membership just expired not too long ago, and now I cant view attachments. I was going to renew, but if noone can see the attachments I post of my knives, then I don't really see the point. I love BF and have been here a long time. The pictures are my favorite part. As soon as I can see them again. I will renew my paying membership.

Spark,
This is a great forum and at anytime you can look at the numbers here and see how popular it is. I understand that not all of the people are paying, but please don't turn off the pictures for those that are not paying. It will only hurt the forum and those that are paying for the ability to post pictures. Why pay to post if the majority can't see, where is the fun in that. If you are needing more funds lets look into alternative ways to fund the site.

It almost seems like blackmail to turn off peoples ability to see pictures. So please don't turn off the pictures. We have a great forum thanks to your hard work, lets not alienate anyone. I think most paying members were "only registered users at one time and probably were not even registered before that. If you alienated them how are you going to get them to become paying members? Please feal free to contact me if you would like some ideas for raising more funds for the forum. I like this forum and I for one would suport it in alternative ways. I look forward to seeing this resolved.

Just like my forespeakers said, this is one of the most popular knife sites. And one of the reasons is that visitors can (could :( ) see goodies. Note that I said "visitors", not "members" as I know there are a lot of people who just lurk around here, without feeling the need to register.
IMO, restricting the show of pics to a very limited number of persons will make many of us migrate to other more friendly speciality forums. Not to mention the visitors will be fewer and fewer as the information flow will regress. I am perfectly aware that information can be valuable without pics, but they add the spice. Besides, they say a picture worth a thousand words...
I was living under the impression that BF has enough income from its paying members and does not need to squeeze a few bucks from just everyone. :( I was thinking that we already support the Forum with our presence here.

Ditto what Tom Krein and Bill Sanders said.
I finally (it took a while, but it happened) went Gold because I like the atmosphere here. I can understand restricting the attaching of pictures (and found my own storage space while I was a basic member, no biggie), but if I just stumbled onto this site now, and saw that not only can't I attach pictures but I can't even *see* them, I'd probably just move on.
Also, in addition to selling knives, there are those posts asking for information about a particular knife. There could be somebody at the low end of the totem pole (no offense, guys, just trying to create a visual) who has that information but can't help because he/she can't see the knife in question.

I agree with Cougar; it makes no sense to shut down viewing privileges for our guest and registered members. How are we supposed to carry on a conversation when half of the participants are unable to see the contents? You might as well shut down guest and registered access all together, and just make the Bladeforums a members only club.

BTW: If you buy Gold or Platnum memberships you should be aware that your 5-meg photo allotment is a permanent limit. Even though I have paid for Gold and Platnum memberships for three years now I am currently unable to post pictures. The file space allotted is fixed and all prior attachments are counted towards the current allotment. In order to post new attachments I would have to delete most of my attachments from the prior years. Fortunately, I have an offsite account; but these posting privileges are greatly overrated.

Spark,
I have been a member here for a long time and post regularly. I've always enjoyed being able to see the photo's and the fact that we can't now after so long is a major turnoff. I'm 18 and in my freshman year of college, I don't exactly have money for a membership at the moment... I'm aware it doesn't cost a fortune, but I have no job while up here and every penny counts...

I agree that restricting pic viewing to paying members is a bad idea. Especially from a knifemaker's point of view. There's no point in hosting pics with BF if only about 5% of the community can see them.

I agree with the prevalent opinion that it's a bad idea to cut off photo viewing to registered buy unpaying members. Now, that might be obvious since I'm a registered unpaying member, but I think it would be a bad decision since the knifemakers and dealers would then have a much smaller market unless they host their photos off-site.

That having been said, if non-paying members are going to no longer be able to view photos, and I were a knifemaker thinking about getting an expensive membership to be able to sell knives, I would want to see a breakdown of numbers of different types of members. Just with the information I have now, I wouldn't upgrade my membership for that purpose with non-payers not being able to view attached images.
