Do you know a tough, reliable brand? A great number of pockets is a plus! Hate jeans.

M90 Swedish Army Surplus store :p :D

Well that´s what I use anyway.

Have a nice weekend,
Colinz

Royal Robbins, mountaineer extraordinaire, has designed a b.d.u. style pant for mountain climbing. The pant has caught on and is standard wear for the writers of the leading gun magazines, the people at Gunsite, and is standard issue to F.B.I. swat teams. Thickness of cloth, quality sewing and fit are all above average.

They might have a website. If not, they are available thru me. - but expensive ( 0ver 60.00/pr.)

RRs, Rail Riders and Columbia - All great pants that eat up abuse (Trust me, I know) :D

REi outlet and Campmore have super deals on 'em.

Can I assume these pants give excellent freedom of movement(including with full pockets) since they are for climbing ?

TIA,
mithril.

Another vote for Columbia here. I like the ones with the zip-off legs for summer. The synthetic ones do pretty good in brush for not snagging, and they dry fast.

They have a 2 page dealer spec sheet which I can send you if you e-mail me at grenadiershop@aol.com. They are roomy, have double knees and ass and six oversize pockets with an additional piece of webbing to hold your pitons.

Colinz, I believe M-90 is in camo only? If that is the case, I am not interested. Hate camo. I want an ordinary green or sand color. At the present moment I own a pair of M-59. They are ok, however I don´t like the pockets. I´d prefer a straight cut and zippers instead of buttons.

I´ll take a look at the RR pants. The Columbia sounds interesting too.

Thaks again

Lots of good stuff out there, especially those designed for army or outdoorsman use. I would suggest wool or synthetic rather than cotton for wet performance and drying, unless you are expecting only moderate wetness and are willing to pay big bucks for ventile [Orvis has a great pair. Buy one or buy a car :)]
There is a Canadian army surplus guy on ebay who sells a good selection of pants. I like the North Face hiking pant alot, but it is not for cold conditions. A bunch of folks make good nylon or poly hiking style pants. Black Diamond makes some nice stuff in Spandura, but this are formfitting stretchy things and they provide no protection against bugs. My favourites all in all are the Schoeller fabric ones that have coolmax against the skin for comfort and are both tough and flexible. mammut makes one with a map pocket, Cloudveil makes one with simpler lines, Arcteryx makes a good one but without the coolmax blend and various outfitters like MEC also have the noncoolmax Schoeler Dryskins. If you are wearing long underwear, that doesn't matter and it warms up this fabric, which doesn't insulate well unless blended with wool, which is available. Another possibility is to use a fleece or windstopper or R pant with a shell.

Check out Orvis and Cabela's online. They have a big selection, although Cabela's is real big on Camo.

One of the lowest priced ways to go (other than surplus items) is Dickeys work pants. You can get them at Orchard Supply Hardware (Sears owned) for under $20. Also by mail. They are a poly/cotton blend and do a lot better than jeans in wet weather. When relatively new, I've found the weave tight/stiff enough to resist skeeters.

They look pretty good, and I like Triple Aught. But I would note that they come only in cotton, cotton/poly or heavy cotton, which ain't good where wetness and cold are possible.

Does anyone have any preference for, or experience with, any of the Royal Robbins models? There are so many different styles it is hard to tell what's what.

Thanks,

Bucky

Ya. I have a few in 2 different styles, but I don't know the names. One has the multiple pockets, double knees with a hammer strap, and the other has fewer pockets and no strap. I like them alot and they're quite comfortable because of the elastic waist. But they're cotton.
If cotton is OK, Patagonia makes a decent pant too, the Utility or the Duck. The thing is probably what fits best [we're all different] and what's on sale because in the better cotton pants I don't see a huge difference.

Ya! They also come as shorts. My only beef [besides the cotton, which is less a beef and more a caveat] is that if you put on a few pounds [which I have been known to do  ] the snap closure may lose the battle of the bulge. I prefer a button to a snap, but for you slim guys, that's no problem

I'd recommend the 5.11 Royal Robbins any day. They have a whole load of pockets including one which was designed perfectly for a surefire E2 at the front. :) :) :)

All of these sound like great choices. My question is which of these would accomodate a 1.5 inch double thick leather belt, perhaps with a loop just behind the right hip. Know what I mean?

Back to the top because I really am in the market for some new pants. Those 5.11s sound great. Campmor has Rail Riders for about $18 or so. But I can't use pants that will not fit a good belt and IWB holster. How about it, guys?
