Among real knife geeks, are there any knives that could be described as dedicated "trout" knives? My daughter enjoys cleaning trout; Lord knows why. But I would like to gift her a first class knife for the job. Most of our fish run around a pound. (She is a grown woman, now). What say you? Thanks...

Chris Reeve Inyoni. They are discontinued, but pop up on Ebay every now and then for about 2 bills.

That link is to the subforum where our resident Knifemakers and Craftsmen sell their wares(fixed blades). No doubt you can find what you're looking for at just about any price point. Some are actually labeled "Bird & Trout" knives, others are of a similar style with a different name. Choppers, hunters, edc, modern, traditional, swords from time to time and plenty of other kinds of blades can be found here. Made from a human that loves what they do. Enjoy!

A.G. Russell has a good selection. The Grohman jackknife mentions and the R. Murphy skinners are among my favorite in that style, though they may be on the large side. There are a lot of good knives out there that would fall into that category.

I guess $50 is out of the question. You folks sure have beautiful taste in knives. But I guess I asked...

I think the ag russell bird and trout is 30-40 bucks in vg10 and should be a great lightweight choice for her needs.

 The Little Fin hunter by Ka-Bar is another good choice. My kid has one and there's nothing wrong with it.

There's also a popular Bird and Trout topic in the Traditional forum area. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1104587-The-Bird-amp-Trout-Thread

Almost any of the Mora or other Scandinavian brands would work great for a trout knife as well.

You were looking for "real knife geeks." You found 'em.

If that's too much money why not get her a nice Swiss Army Knife? Lot of styles available. Good first knife. She can clean trout with it too...it even has a scaler.

Other than that, a RAT 1.

Rapala fillet knives, maybe two different sizes. Say 4 inch and 6-7 inch blades. $25-$60 most places. They come with leather sheaths. One model has a cork handle so it floats if you drop it in the river.

Protech runt. All you need is a 2" blade to open up a trout...Clean about 50 browns a year with mine. I have also used a Spyderco Manix II.

Heck, if you're on a tight budget, get a Victorinox serrated paring knife with the plastic sheath. Costs all of about 7 to 8 dollars and goes through stuff like a laser. Weighs about the same as a medium feather, and cleans up easy. My better half carried one in her purse as a whatever knife. I use it as a fishing knife sometimes, and it does exceptional. Dishwasher safe for the lady.

Why not a dedicated filet knife that will filet/clean trout and all sorts of other fish?

I've been eyeing a new fishing knife lateley, Dojo Paring Knife 80mm, 60 bucks for Aogami, but I usually bring a small packable petty.

Nice looking goldies keyman!

If you want to purchase something special, a bird & trout knife was designed for smaller cutting chores. There are a gizillion choices from cheap to very expensive. I personally use a SAK most of the time, but I seldom keep any trout ever as I am a catch & release person. A SOG Field Pup or a Mora would work well and is not expensive.

I have several "Bird and Trout" but a friend of mine gave me an AG Russell Woods Walker a few years ago and I use that one most of the time. It has a good size handle and a small blade. One thing I really like is the sheath. It fits into your back pocket and when I need it I can flip it over and use it as a Strop to touch up the blade. This also works great as a paring knife at camp and sharpens easily..

There are lots of choices but for the price this is a good one.
