"Trout" knife?

If you want something that is "special" but not too special (meaning <$300), take a look at the Bark River line from dealers like Knives Ship Free.

I do alot of trout fishing and have been using my wifes Zwilling 3 1/2" paring knife for about the last two years. I think it's the "classic" model. you can pick them up on ebay for $20-$40 and they make a great trout knife. They have a nice steel bolster and black three pin handle, makes them look kind of classy. I made a simple leather sheath for it and even use it for bird and rabbit hunting. The steel is thin so it's easy to keep sharp and slices great. Of course I had to buy her another one......

I would recommend an Old Hickory paring knife if you don't mind adding a leather sheath. Then I would look into a small folder or a Buck smidgen for a backup. I really like my combination of an old Western/Kabar Remora and a Leatherman Kick for brookie fishing. Add a Vic Classic in the Altoid kit, and you've got the perfect mountain fishing kit.

I am a Buck knife person, most fillet knives are too big for trout, but the 125 StreamMate is perfect, and well under $100, here is a pick next to a Buck 110 for size comparison!

For a suggestion that is totally out of the the $50 price range, you could always get her a Harsey Tactical Trout. Of course I don't even know how one could get their hands on one unless you went to a knife show where Bill was selling one. I've never seen one up for resale, so I don't even know how much they cost, but I'm sure it's plenty. So really I'm just sharing this as a "ain't it cool" idea, not a serious idea.

(Edit: Of course if you did really like this design there is the similar Gerber Big Rock also designed by Harsey for under $40, though in knife nerd terms it is a very different beast)

I purchased a Grohmann almost 20 years ago and feel it is a nice blade with a decent sheath. I am sure there are more expensive blades out there, but this is decent for sure. Being that it was so long ago, the price paid eludes me. However, if you go to Amazon, they seem to sit at about $70.
