Not much discussion about disc grinders because most of us make them . I did too . I had a 1hp variable but it only spun in one direction . I use a disc to get things flat . The platen is ok but I feel the disc is way better for me anyway . I decided I wanted a better disc sander . I thought about Beaumont Metal works a 1hp variable with reverse and I wanted the table. I also looked into the Tru Grit and the Hardcore 1.5 hp . I went with the Trugrit pretty much on price . But I was very concerned about the lower hp on the one I purchased . It was the middle of the road at a scant 1/2 hp .

On my home made one it stalled very easy . So I assumed either the conversion with the cheap variable drive was bad or I may not have set it up right .. Who knows I am not a electrician .. And I really can't remember things like I used to so I just leave that stuff to the pro's .

I got my disc . Sadly it didn't come completely set up with the wiring installed or even a plug . But they did ship that stuff out fast and were responsive and were a little embarrassed about it . I have wired my KB from when I got my KMG so i did it and was very easy .

Now on to my concern when I bought it . The 1/2 just didn't sit well but I tell you it has all the power and then some . It can be stalled but only at low but not even close to as easy as my previous one . The table is something I really wanted and I am already using it . On to the disc . The disc is way different than the KMG . It seems a lot heavier .. It also has a nice little bevel At the top . Not as slick as Nathan's but a lot nicer than my last one . It has no vibration at all and doesn't even want to walk on the table in bolted .

So I'm my humble opinion I really like this and I am glad I got it. Granted I didn't have the option of a side to side with Beaumont's and I am sure his is very nice . But there is a difference in price . So that's my take on this . I enclosed a few pics .

Marko3, That looks like a very nice disc sander. The table looks really well made and with a hex wrench handy it should be quick to tilt for dovetailed bolsters and the like. I use a Beaumont table but it was expensive although very well made. Your disc should do everything that a knife maker needs. Larry

I've been thinking about getting one of these as well but the 1/2 HP was what was holding me back. Thanks for posting the review.

I bought it with out the motor, put a 2hp on it to match my esteem, and share a vfd with it. I really like it. Seem very solid. Table is square and adjust for angle consistently. I have never even slowed my down!

horse power is not the end all . My 1st disc grinder ( recommended by a motor shop ) was 1/3 hp. 1140 rpm and you could not stall it out .

2 hp is overkill, but I wanted it to run off the same vfd. There are jumpers to move in the vdf if you use a smaller motor. It may have worked with a smaller one, but I didn't want to risk it. Also, this way, there is a chance to swap motors if something happens to one of them.

Mark,I have the same machine from tru=grit and it is a good machine, then I stuck one of Nathan's steel disc on it and we are now cadillacin.

I am glad to hear some other guys are using this . I had some good use out of it today . I just picked up some knobs so I don't have to break out the hex everytime I want to adjust it. I put a 30 degree bevel on most of my fixed blade handles . before I had to shut down the KMG and adjust the platen .. not really a big deal but the disc is sooo much easier and a little more precise . I will be able to dove tail quickly . I do wish I got one of Nathans but when he had them for sale I had just spent money on something else so it was a no go !

So Darrin definitely no problem in the power department . The guy I talked to at trugrit also said the smaller one that Jack pointed out with a 1/3 has ample power too. But reverse was way high on my list of wants in a new disc . So I did just speed up things and made things easier in my shop . I love working in the shop but I like to finish things and enjoy life too !

It's good to hear you like the disc sander I had contemplated getting there complete set like you did, but after a few questions here I found a good price on a 1hp motor and a vfd. After shipping and every thing I got mine for just under a 200 less with getting the trugrit disc and table I'll be setting mine up tomorrow morning after I get off work. Hope I'm as pleased with my set up as you are with yours.

Here is mine. It is an RW Wilson stand, with a Nielsen disc and a 1.5hp 3ph motor connected to my VFD.
