Tru Grit Heat Treating

It sucks when a problem occurs and they do occur at times with all companies.

That being said I have use TruGrit for heat treating for 10 years and they have done hundreds of blades for me with no problem at all.

Sent 8 blades to Jeff @ TruGrit via USPS. Misplaced the tracking number (my bad, fully realize that). Called TruGrit Shop 3 weeks after sending to check if they received them - whoever answered the phone said: give me a minute.....OH YEAH, I do have your envelope in my hand - you will be receiving an invoice in the next 2 days.
3 weeks later - nothing - call them again, email, - Jeff never responds.... finally begged someone at TruGrit to connect me to Jeff so I could just get my blades back - "We do not have your blades".... "what do you mean? Somebody confirmed they have them in their hand when I called!!" - " they made a mistake - talk to USPS".
I understand that I cannot prove anything since I do not have the tracking number and once you lose your receipt - USPS cannot track it, BUT....I'm not from the US and my name is very, very uncommon - so, when they read it back to me from my package via the phone - I'm sure it was no mistake.

Sad and frustrating - so much time wasted, money, and effort.
Time to look for a new HT place.
Did you get or ask for a signature confirmation with the priority mail?
I always pay the $3 for signature confirmation. And if something is really important I send it via private courier UPS/FedEx

TruGrit is a small business, they are not perfect. But they have generally always done a good job for me and been a good vendor of supplies. I haven’t used their heat treating in 3 or 4 years but I know them and Jeff has always gone the extra step for me. This could also be because I lived nearby and could go there, they knew my name and so there was a level of more personal attention.

You need a solution. I would send them a letter in the mail and ask for their assistance in finding your package with the details you provided in this post

Same experience as Dimchick. Sent 9 blades before Thanksgiving. Afdter 2 weeks I called. No record of my blades although they showed delivered by USPS. Jeff said he would check with the post office and call me. I had this same conversation three times and he never once called or followed up. My blades showed back up at my house a month later marked "return to sender". @jarodtodd has done great work for me in the past and will have my business from now on.

This!
So important to have signature confirmation.

S smarti1038 if the box was "return to sender" it was delivered to the wrong address and they put in it the mail "Return to sender". You are lucky they did not just keep it.

I think it's easy to have a variety of different experiences from different people when using a small business of any sort. I have used JT, Peters, Texas Knifemaker, and TruGrit, but I find myself going back to TruGrit always now, because they have the best price for my very small batches and variety of steels. My last batch had 3 AEB-L, a 52100/410 san mai, and Damasteel blades and they were done perfectly. I even got some great tips from Jeff over the phone about how to etch the Damasteel. It wasn't the fastest process, but if I cared about that I would invest in my own HT setup. I certainly haven't had an experience to scare me away from doing business with them again, but YMMV.

My last batch of blades sent to TruGrit came back promptly and very well done, I was very pleased with them, but my most recent order has been very frustrating to me,they are giving me the runaround and honestly I know they are likely swamped with orders, but just be honest about it, or tell customers on your website about slowdowns. I've had to do a lot of my own heat treating due to customers waiting because its been 3 months, no biggy for high carbon but stainless is a pain with foil and cryo in the mix which is why I send it out. I've called them 3 times now, I was very polite and Jeff told me three times now that my order was up and he would have it shipped out, took down my name and everything, first he said a week, I called back two weeks later, then he said in two days, I called back two weeks later, then he said in two days again, its been 3 weeks since then and i've heard nothing. If you know its going to be awhile then don't tell me differently, show me enough respect to be honest with me and just tell me how it is. I don't care if it takes 6 months, tell me its gonna take 6 months and I'll have my steel shipped back to me and HT elsewhere. I can understand being behind schedule, and i'd still like to do business with Trugrit in the future, but the lack of honesty is putting a sour taste in my mouth. I hate to be vocal about hard working individuals, but after 3 letdowns my frustration is getting the better of me.

UPDATE: Im still waiting since my last post 1.5 months ago, I called 3 more times and was directly lied to atleast twice, first time "your blade will be done in two days, called again weeks later, "I have them done they just need to be straightened and will be shipped in a day or two" , (two weeks went by) this last time I told Jeff exactly what he told me last time and that I've heard nothing, he said my card on file must be expired, but my order was ready to be shipped no later than Monday after I "updated" my info, makes no sense tho, why not call me if it's expired? Dont you want to get paid? I'm calling again Monday and if my blades aren't being sent I'm giving them an earful, this is disgusting, lying to your customers over and over when they've been very patient and respectful, Just tell me the truth, there's no excuses to lie to your customers ever, completely unprofessional and disrespectful, dont use their service unless you want "14 days maximum" to turn into 4+ months of waiting, They won't be honest, so I will be.

Sounds like we are in the same boat. I sent my blades in in February, a month later I got an email saying they received it and that's it. I called, texted and emailed. No reply. I doubt I will be using them again for HT.

I finally received them about a week after that message. But to what point? The wait was so long it was completely worthless to me as a service that would benefit me and my time-frames, no discount offered either. Hope you get your b

I hope so. What pisses me off the most is complete absence of communication. I asked Tru grit to pass him a message, got a hold of his phone and texted him, left him voice messages - nothing. At this point I just want my steel back, even untreated, so I can take it to a proper shop.

HA!!!! I sent my blades in OCTOBER of last year and just got them back two weeks ago!!

I was told by their guy Jeff that I was getting a discount on them for them taking so long but I guess their greed is stronger than their satisfaction for customers because I was fully charged in the end. All I can say about tru-grit is that their heat treating service is poor and would not recommend however, their online store seems to do just fine because I just bought a personalizer plus from them not to long ago. But then again my ht experience with them is too long to describe here so let me cut it down for you and trust me on this. "Don't send them anything!"

Same story here!!!

So, I called Tru Grit yesterday with the intention to get to talk to the heat treater in person because he was not replying to text and messages. Luckily, he was there and it turned out that my blades have been ready for a while, but someone in the company entered my email into the system twice, one of which was incorrect, so they were sending emails to the wring address. Bottom line is - try to talk to the guy in person, don't leave him messages or texts.

I would really like to think that they’re telling you the truth, but having been given the run around for months and seen the stories of the same things happening to others, it seems all too convenient for them to “have the wrong email.”

I did eventually get my blades back about a week after that post, but they've lost my business due to dishonesty, should've atleast given me a discount....
