Tru-Oil Alternative

Permalyn works well on gunstocks, for sure.It is very thin and really soaks in.
I can't say that "spar" means much anymore. Originally it meant marine grade (for use on spars) today--who knows? :grumpy:
Minwax Tung Oil finish is another good one that is a penetrating finish. At one point I bought Damar Varnish, boiled linseed oil and pure Turpentine at an art supply store to make gunstock finish. Talk about pricey! But you know what you have, at least. :)

Someone around here (Dan K.?) suggested adding Acetone to the oil/varnish/spirits mix to make it less viscose, more penetrating and quicker drying. I tried it and it did work well, only the mixture jelled up after a couple of days and became unusable. to work around this, I would recomend taking a little bit of the 3 part mix and diluting it with an equal volume of Acetone to make enough for the job, and keeping the main batch in its original container.
:)
