After reading j williams post about having his gear stolen from his vehicle, I started thinking about replacing my good truck knives with some not quite as expensive. My old setup was a Busse Natural Outlaw E, Spyderco Police, and a red Vic Farmer (love the saw!) We had a medium size knife show a week ago, so I set myself a $50 budget to see what I could come up with as a replacement set. Here is what I found. Well used Buck 119 for $20.00 (I added the lanyard and cleaned it up), Older Buck 110 with leather sheath $15.00, and a Victorinox GAK with a broken tip for $6.00, that I reground. For a total of $41.00 I have a decent setup that if stolen, no huge loss. I also replaced my Wetterlings axe with a Fiskars that I bought at Menards for $15.00 Excuse the bad pic, it`s too early to go outside and use "the stump."

That makes a lot of sense. You picked some some good ones for sure. You might have to add a JK in there someplace. You have the bases covered well.

I really should own one of my own knives! Every time I make one for myself, I end up selling it to pay bills.

Great choices. I do the same, have good but cheaper knives in my truck. I lost a Randall #1 and all my camping equipment out of my Jeep many years ago. You never know when some dirtballs are looking for a quick cheap haul.

My truck blades consist of Moras and Fiskars axes. Don't come any cheaper, and they still do the job well enough.

Great idea john. I think you have the bases covered well right there. I now will be removing my go bag from my truck at night, or when Im not home, and my truck is.

I have been really thinking hard on the kit that will be going back into my truck. I will definately have my EMS Responder bag, Radio, Tools, and climbing gear in there, but I think my field gear will be kept in a differant bag that I can remove easily. My other gear is getting stowed in their bags, inside a locked box. I am keeping my expensive flashlights and multitool etc,in a small pouch I got from mtnfolk mike, that is now locked in my center console.

I have really began to rethink my approach to gear stowing. When I finally can replace my handgun, it will not ride anywhere but in the locked glovebox, and come in for the night when Im done for the day.

I like your choices. I keep a buck 119 in my truck as well as a cheap no-name hatchet. My Fisker's is part of my good gear :)

I've been thinking about a lockable, heavy duty truck box. On the one hand, I hate that it takes up so much space on my relatively mid-size box (I have a 1/4 tonne with the jump doors not full cab). On the other hand, I actually find I use the little space behind the seats for a lot of stuff like shuttling the odd person or groceries ect. Filling up that space with a gear is a bit of a hassel as I'm always shuttling to the box and then back from the box to the back area again.

Who else uses a truck box? How secure are they?

The gear in my car is all cheap stuff that I started out with. It all works good, but is low- price gear (mostly surplus).

My car knives consist of an Ontario Spec-Ops copy of the Ka-Bar USMC, an Ontario machete and a hardware store hatchet (which has taken one of the best edges I've ever been able to get on a hatchet). Altogether, the prices when I bought them came in under $50.

My "cheap truck trio" consists of a Fiskars axe, Cold Steel Finn Bear and Vic Climber.

:)

Taiwanese Rambo, U.S. Army hatchet.

Should be able to conquer the world, I figgur. AND, know what direction they came from!

Stomper,

Well done. That's a good idea, and you showed it's possible to be frugal.

However, I look at what you paid a little differently: Your time has value, and you need to factor this in, when determining what these knives cost you. For example, the $6 GAK with the broken tip –– how long did it take you to regrind, 10 minutes? 5 minutes? How much do you charge for your labor per hour? If you spent 10 minutes regrinding tha knife, and you charge $20 dollars per hour for your labor (just making up numbers, here), then you should add $3.33 to the complete cost you paid for the GAK, for a total of $9.33. The same goes for any sharpening, cleaning, rust removal, or anything else that needed to be done to the other two knives, as well as any extra labor involved with searching for this set of truck knives.

Every extra minute that you spent on these knives had an opportunity cost. That time could've been spent with family, or making more of your own knives to sell, or whatever else.

I'm not saying you didn't do well; it looks like you did. I'm just saying it can be worth looking at your actual total costs, for situations like this.

I've done the same thing for fear of theft. They have to be cheap and in production. Mora, Buck 110. Not what I ideally want, but should be good enough for most instances.

Well, time is always money, but if it's time spent doing something you enjoy, do you factor in that cost? I enjoy refurbing and fixing up stuff from time to time, so I wouldn't count that as time wasted (i.e. costing me) but as time spend doing something recreational. Just my .02 though, and I totally see the point you were making, I'm just trying to make a counterpoint :D

I use a jobsite construction box (steel) chained to the truck thru the forklift skids with 3/8" grade 70 chain and DISCUS padlock. I had to make a custom locking bar to secure the ld from prying up (something Vancouver addicts and thiefs will do to truck boxes, when they are looking for tools etc). Its big heavy and beefy and secure. I weather proofed the lid with a neoprene foam seal.

bit of a pain to undo the locks but worth it.

I'm in the designing stages of a all steel fully reinforced box cover (lid) that will cover the tailgate when closed to prevnt opening. Ther will be locking bars across the lid to prevent prying. It will turn my whole truck box (cargo area) into one big locking box.

oh for truck knives i have a sak and a SOG seal pup, and a Estwing large axe)
