Hope many of you saw the The History Channel documentary, True Pirates of the Caribbean, which aired last Sunday July 9.

Amazing good stuff, well done. Best of all was the info about Black Bart. To me, he was truly the pirate for history to remember.

His "accomplishments" of sinking ships and killing are what they are, but a few facts about the man stand out:

He was always well-dressed.
Loathed cruelty, profanity, drunkenness & louts.
Never drank and forbade excessive gambling between his crew.
Held Sunday worship service onboard ship.
Had excellent manners.
Treated those he met with the utmost kindness and respect.
Was always clean-shaven.
Being a teetotaler, he did not imbibe alcohol.
Had excellent, beautiful handwriting.
Being a lover of music he had on-board hired musicians.
And had a standing order, that if he were to die in battle he was to be thrown into the sea.

Imagine that. He developed a code of conduct or "articles" as well, pretty interesting stuff:

"Every man shall have an equal vote in affairs of moment. He shall have an equal title to the fresh provisions or strong liquors at any time seized, and shall use them at pleasure unless a scarcity may make it necessary for the common good that a retrenchment may be voted.

"Every man shall be called fairly in turn by the list on board of prizes, because over and above their proper share, they are allowed a shift of clothes. But if they defraud the company to the value of even one dollar in plate, jewels or money, they shall be marooned. If any man rob another he shall have his nose and ears slit, and be put ashore where he shall be sure to encounter hardships.

"None shall game for money either with dice or cards.

"The lights and candles should be put out at eight at night, and if any of the crew desire to drink after that hour they shall sit upon the open deck without lights.

"Each man shall keep his piece, cutlass and pistols at all times clean and ready for action.

"No boy or woman to be allowed amongst them. If any man shall be found seducing any of the latter sex and carrying her to sea in disguise he shall suffer death.

"He that shall desert the ship or his quarters in time of battle shall be punished by death or marooning.

"None shall strike another on board the ship, but every man's quarrel shall be ended on shore by sword or pistol in this manner. At the word of command from the quartermaster, each man being previously placed back to back, shall turn and fire immediately. If any man do not, the quartermaster shall knock the piece out of his hand. If both miss their aim they shall take to their cutlasses, and he that draweth first blood shall be declared the victor.

"No man shall talk of breaking up their way of living till each has a share of 1,000. Every man who shall become a cripple or lose a limb in the service shall have 800 pieces of eight from the common stock and for lesser hurts proportionately.
The captain and the quartermaster shall each receive two shares of a prize, the master gunner and boatswain, one and one half shares, all other officers one and one quarter, and private gentlemen of fortune one share each.

"The musicians shall have rest on the Sabbath Day only by right. On all other days by favour only. "

What think ye, Cantinistas, of Bart?

uh...I saw the special, and you forgot the part about the men he killed and the rape and plunder that Black Bart Robert's men would do.

"A short and merry life".

He was the best- over 400 ships taken in three year period, wasn't it? Blackbeard had something like 40.
I missed this part, but he was originally forced into service by another pirate as a navigator, and when that Captain died, the crew elected him.

Wow - retirement benefits, workers compensation - quite a benefits package!

Private Gentlemen of Fortune ? Where is the romance in that ? L:O:L

It sounds like there was a high level of discipline . I wonder how often it had to be enforced ?

Nice read, 45/70. I suspect the 'facts' are hard to come by regarding much of this. Take away the romance of 'freedom' from the Pirates, and get them off the water and into the present Age, you have Hell's Angels.

ah, munk, glad you saw it. How 'bout that part when the governor of Martinique declared war on him. Bart turned the tables by catching the governor at sea- and hanging him from his own ships' yardarm.

Arrgh, indeed.

and great link, .45-70.

That the crew buried Bart at sea before the battle ended says something. It's almost hard to believe this is a true story.

Ad;
That was the thing about Roberts; he was INSULTED by the proclamation from the Governor.

munk

Yep. The 'moral' outrage of the sociopath; a woman strikes her attacker and he says: "Now you're really going to get it."

The obligation of society is to recognize we are, 'going to get it' and to fight back.

I got a kick out of Black Bart on 'TV', but if I'd been there, I'd have wanted him dead.

Well, Bart set HIM straight. :)

You have to admit, psycho or not, he had his own way of doing things.

The teetotaler thing- I respected that. Imagine peer pressure from a group of PIRATES.

Murder, rape, plunder :thumbdn: "Romance" of piracy :thumbdn: Actual pirates off Somalia :thumbdn:

I don't know. Do you think being hanged on his own ship made the Governor more or less crooked than he already was?

Hmmmm, I'm guessing he never did another crooked deal again.

That makes sense. Never a crooked deal again, nor a chance to become Mayor of Oakland.

I liked reading some of the pirates cried at Bart's death.

You have to take into account the chiropractic benifits of hanging. :D

Uh Bruise, if hanging is chiropractic, is keel hauling exfoliation?

Never thought of that. :D

I'll cut you in on some of the profits from my chain of spas and beauty centers.

I can hear it now

"...once around the keel did more for my skin than 10 years of traditional spas!

Thanks
Bruise Spa!"
