I am considering picking one of these up for my field work.
http://www.truenorthgear.com/product_detail.php?path=3&p_id=212

I have been eying the True North packs for a few years, but the Wildland Aero-Vest is the first of their items that I think would work perfect for me.

I often switch between wearing my 45L pack and a few diffrerent styles of standard “foresters” vests when in the field.
The problem is that with just the pack on, I can’t get to the gear I use regularly (field book, PDA, pens/pencils/markers, flagging, compass, GPS receiver, clinometer, plastic bags, thermometer, PIT tag reader, compact camera, etc., etc.). The vest works great because I can have all that stuff right at my fingertips, but if I need to carry more bulky stuff like pH/conductivity meter, lunch, water, emergency prep. gear, larger camera, rain gear, etc., etc. I need the carrying capacity of the pack.

I often put the vest on and then put the pack on over it, but that gets a bit cumbersome moving through brush or slogging through lakes/bogs/marshes trying to catch fish/frogs/turtles and whatnot with a dipnet or my hands. And since the shoulder straps cover several of the pockets, it is not the best combination.
I also have vests that have a large “backpack” pocket on the back, but those just are not designed to carry much heavy gear in, and tend to pull the front of the vest up considerably.

A few years ago I designed basically two vest panels that would attach to the shoulder straps and waist belt of my pack, thus combining the pack and vest, which would be perfect (into a “pest” as River8 calls it).

But I just haven’t made the time to finish building it.

Then I saw the Aero-vest and it looks like True North beat me to it.
It would be easy to make the two panels attachable to my pack, or use it alone when I didn’t need the pack. And their builds are pretty tough from what I have seen, and heard from folks on fire crews and in SAR.

Recently someone posted that they were going to or had purchased one of these vests, but I didn’t get a chance to respond at the time to hear what they thought of it.
I can’t seem to find the thread, but also thought it would be good to start a new thread so everyone can share their thoughts and or experiences. It is a relatively new product, so not sure if many folks have had a chance to look at/try it.

So please, share away.

Thanks

If I am not mistaken, that is the vest/pest that our very own River-8 designed. It is a great product, I have seen quite a few SAR types with them. I have never actually worn one but have thoroughly inspected a few (while drooling over it). Seems to be lots of mods you can make to them also plenty of accessories to hang off it.

Really? I had no idea he was involved in the design.
Makes sense. He has some great, field proven ideas.

If that is true River8, good on ya’!

All the more reason to get one, in my opinion. .
I often seem to have difficulty finding gear that is actually designed to be used in the field. Everything from electronics to clothing to packs, work fine in the office, but just don’t cut it when I get out in the field for weeks on end.

But I am sure most of you know what I am talking about there.

That's a nice looking rig... I'm a fairly big fella and have a long torso so it's often hard for me to gind vests or LB Suspenders that fit me well... that thing looks like you can completely take it apart to it's main components and add or substract as needed. I may have to pick up one of these... If it works I can just sell off my other vests.

Guilty (somewhat) as charged...

While it is not exactly like my "Pest," it is conceptually based on its design.

True North is a GREAT company to work with, and the Aero Vest is a solid product.

It is amazing that they’ve been able to design and produce it for the price  !
Another company played with the idea for some 18 months, and finally decided that it couldn’t be
produced and sold at a marketable price; just too complicated (which speaks to my Rube-Goldberg
design  than to their capabilities).

Wapiti, if you’re ever in the Portland area (ok, 45 miles east), we could probably arrange a demo…

Cheers,

River8:

Glad to hear you were involved in this. And glad you were able to find a good company to produce your ideas, because those of us who use gear need gear designed by guys like you who know what works and what doesn’t.
And the fact it is at such a reasonable price is a great help. I do what I do not for the money or the fame, but because I love it.

Thanks for the invite.
You have actually invited me to come hang out with you folks several times (“other” forums), but I just haven’t been able to make it. My life is pretty crazy (in good way) with family and home life, and work, these days. But I hope to make it some day.

I have mentioned this before, but I actually used to live in Trout Lake and worked/played (biologist and other ventures) throughout the mid-Columbia area (95-99), and I may have actually met you without knowing it, as I helped out on a few searches on the GP.
So I am very familiar with the area you work and play in, and miss it regularly.

Thanks again,
Brome

Roger that, I have gathered enough supplies for a fancy sheath!! I would imagine my mistress will come along for the ride as well!:D

Wapiti, I'm pretty sure you are talking about my post, I have not had much free time as of late, however I will take some pics of the vest and what I have in it to post here, it is very well made, quality construction, and I'm pretty sure you could attach it to the pack straps like you said, I'll check on that.
I'm also hoping to get up to Iddylwild for a day this weekend

I remember your picture now; yes I was you. Thanks for finding this post and the offer.
Sounds like you are as busy as I am.
Anything you could share about the vest would be a great help to me.
I am pretty convinced I am getting it regardless at this point, but I would value the input of someone who has one on hand.

Thanks again,
Brome

just some pics to hold you down until I can write up more

i am also a firefighter, and personaly own a truenorth wild land pack the quality is superb and can not be outdone, that being said i do not have this particular piece of gear. if it is anything like thier packs i would say buy it..

Thanks for taking the time to post take and post those pictures.
I appreciate it very much.
Looks like you can cram a whole pack's worth of gear it!

I just checked out their website and ordered some catalogs to scope out. The pack definitely looks like something I could use...I am trying to find dealers around my neck of the woods to check one out in person...

with the load out I have in there now, it's pretty darn full. A cool feature of the Wildland version is the flaps with fastex buckles that allow you to expand a bit. I'm thinking about adding the belt and Aero pack, and maybe a personal pouch for food too, we'll see

So yesterday we went out for Trees-N-Quiet (the dreaded Koffee Klatch Knife Kult)...

We spotted 3 generations of the PEST/Aero-Vest:

3-Pest.jpg

From the left; my current version, the proto-type sent to True North (360Joules), and the Aero-Vest (Safetyman).
Both them fellers wore backpacks over the PEST/Aero-Vest.

The Aero-Vest did nothing to interfere with Safetyman's knife abuse  .

While its true we almost Died ( !!!); it was NOT because of equipment failure... :D

what do you guys keep loaded in your PEST? You go with a basic 10- essentials, or more specific?

Ok; so this could take awhile...
The lines are a bit fuzzy between what is IN the PEST, and what is attached TO the PEST.

While a couple of years out-of-date, some info is available here.

I'll work on a more specific, detailed reply - keep in mind it is an ever-evolving list of contents.

Simple answer: Yes, the 10 essentials are essentially covered

More later,

sounds/looks good, I'd be really interested in some detailed pics/review of what you keep in there and why, I've picked up more than a few helpful things from you
