Trusting Benchmade to Get It Right This Time: Lifesharp

I guess I am lucky...a few weeks ago, I bought a new 710S, and mine came very sharp and the edge grinds are even.

I was under the impression that recently BM's QC was actually on the upswing. When I examined several Axis models at the gun show before settling on the 710S, I didn't really notice any dull edges on any of them (though I did notice on some of the older liner-lock models). And dull edges really bug me.

For the most part, I prefer to buy BM knives in person, though. Or buy over the Net from someone who will check it for you beforehand.

However, if there is still a dullness problem getting through, it should indeed be corrected completely.

My most recent acquisition (I'm due again

) was a BM 705. Very nice knife. I got it from mark@mjsknives and asked him to check it for the usual BM QC problems. He sent me a knife that in all respects but the edge was excellent. The edge was about as good as I felt I could expect from BM, which means sort of OK, but nothing impressive.

However, I'm of the school of thought that says the factory edge is the least important feature. I'll need to sharpen it eventually anyway, so it's not so bad if I have to do it right away. I've rarely bought a knife (even Spyderco--one out of 3) with an edge that I consider really good. I rebeveled the edge and it now cuts free hanging paper quite smoothly. I've cut free hanging string (that took a bit of a snap to the wrist). I'm pretty happy with the knife now.
