Trusty BK-9" To mod, or not to mod?

Should Mentor refinish his BK-9?

  • Yes! It's a great knife and it deserves an overhaul.

Don't get me wrong - The intention was not to put the knife out to pasture! I just think that a piece of steel this fine might warrant some ironwood handles and yellowheart + black spacers, and maybe a decent patina that can evolve with time.

All the best,

Well, the old girl has loved you so well and so long, that I suppose she’d like a little attention to make her feel young again. Some rouge and lipstick would probably have her giggling like a kid again in no time.:D

I’d love to see her dressed up like you describe, and I’ll admit that I’m a sucker for a good, funky patina. Those ironwood scales with the spacers would be something to see, too. I guess she’s probably tired of always being dressed in basic black, and want’s to get all dolled up for your next dance.

Even old working girls like to feel pretty from time to time, I guess.

If you do decide to fix her up, I can’t wait to see the pics.

I guess I've spent enough time over in the Becker side of this forum to know the correct answer: Buy more Beckers.

If you want to keep this one how it is, buy a new one and mod that. They are INEXPENSIVE not cheap. A BK-9 is next on my list.

Why, Cynt, you've expressed my sentiments exactly.

Still, if Mike does decide to dress her up, I can't wait to see the pics.

I say leave it alone and keep using it as is. It looks great - better than new - and every scrape and ding is a memory that you have made.

If you want to fancy one up, get a new BK-9 and make it fancy. But leave Old Faithful as is.

+1 - well stated!

It's a working blade, do what ya want with it, I'd use it stock or "pimped".

I'm with Skimo. One of my favorite pass times is taking old/used stuff and making it look/work like new, even if it's going to get beat to shit again.
If you don't like how it turns out, you can punish it for being ugly every time you use it. :D
I think I'de like the look of ironwood with a blued finish. Yeah, that'd look sharp.
