Trying out a new leather dye mix. Pics inside.

That looks Great Tal...
I hope some day you own a Woodsman from Andy, so you might make a sheath for it too... ;) ;) hint hint :D

Very rich looking color great job,I use a lot of the dark brown Fiebings in quarts on the hawk blade covers as well as the curly maple hafts----

Really nicely done, and I'm impressed with how even it is. If I can be nosy how do you get that sort of eveness? I've been applying the dye with the leather is still wet with the wool daubers in a circular motion one way and then the other to try to get total coverage, but with the large scabbards I do there can still occasionally be some variation.

Also are using satin shene for the top coat or something else entirely?

Feel free to ignore all questions if you would rather not answer. :)

Hey Tal,

Beautiful work, really beautiful. I dabble a bit in leather bending as a hobby of mine. Tried to stain a few pieces of mine and some turned out real nice, others not so. Your coverage looks real nice and even. Mine usually blotch and ruin my work. I've since tried just dipping my sheaths in hot wax and the color I get comes out a nice light/medium brown.

Craig - what works for me is this:

1) Get a spray bottle and fill with water.
2) Wet the leather evenly to open the pores of the leather with the water.
3) Use the dauber quickly and in circles until the leather seems to be rejecting it a bit (it is full?)
4) When you have #3 over the whole sheath - stop - let it sit - wipe off the excess after a few minutes.

This gets me good results.

You could also dip the entire sheath in the dye when it is completed and sewed - this is what people like Chuck Burrows do - to great effect.
