Trying Out My New Khuk

Earlier today I took my 12" AK out to the woodpile beside my house for a little testing. I first chopped a thin (about 2.5"), fairly seasoned branch in half. This AK ain't no 22" GRS, but it did pretty well. Until now, I never had any experience chopping with a knife this small, but I'd hazard a guess that for its size, the AK did well due to it being blade heavy. After chopping through the branch, I decided to try stripping some of the bark from it. This is where the khuk began to shine. Starting at the recurved section and using a draw cut motion, I managed to take off most of the bark within a few minutes. The 12 incher was very easy to control during this task while a larger khuk might have been more awkward and tiring. This khuk would come in handy for gathering bark and wood strips for fire tinder.

After testing the edge was still pretty sharp, so I just steeled it some with the chakma.

I also managed to get the karda out (the two knives were in the wrong holes, so that probably contributed to the situation). The k & c now fit tightly but snugly.

Rusty calls the 12" AK the "pocket battleship" of khukuris.
I like the little blem that I have...it has a pugnacious attitude.
Even cut it's own sheath!

I am most pleased with my 12inch AK. It isn't your stereotypical khukri-and shouldnt really be compared-but it comes into its own in the mid knife range. I would favour it over a kabar or similar in the field. The ideal model for day hiking and such.
 
By Jim's definition, the Randall 1-7 is the tinkertoy of fighting knives, I suppose.
 
Don't worry Jim, I won't be trading in my larger khuks for 12 inchers any time soon. ;)

I agree with you about favoring the 12" AK over kabar type knives Mjjbecker, especially for chopping chores. Besides being a good mid-knife, the 12" AK can help prevent mid-khuks from getting an inferiority complex when sharing space with 25" Kobras and 22 GRSs. ;)

And its just the right size for kindly old researchers to carry on long trips, whether or not they want to admit it. :p

Yep, my 12" AK is just the right size for when ever I go out of town. It's strange though, when people see it they think it's Huge then there eye's really pop out:O when they see my 15" AK or M43 hanging on my wall.:D he he he
 
Perceptions can be weird.
I have a small kuk. By any other standards, a 9" blade is large.
In a kuk it is cute.

CUTE??K's are NOT CUTE!! I can't believe YOU said that!!:barf:You have to get an M43,curious to see how it would do on deer,you seem to be the only one around here that manages to get deer. In Fl. the deer look like large dogs!I have two M43'S & will get to chop some trees this weekend,when I go to work!CUTE,I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE "HE' SAID THAT!:barf:
