Well, you guys have talked me into the White Owl, so I picked one up while I was a the Rendezvous.
I've wanted another Primitive bone for a while and if I was gonna go for an Owl, I figured why not.

So far it's a great little pocket knife, the single spring makes it extremely pocket friendly, even more so than my #66 Jack. The long pull and bail just add to the overall class of this wonderful little knife.

It's not a really stout knife, but it feels like it could still handle a good days work, which, hopefully this squirrel season we will find out.

Great pull on it, maybe a 3. It's the lightest spring tension I have on a GEC, but it still has a decent snap.

The prim bone is really comfortable in hand smooth, but not too.

Very nice Johnny, the owl is groing on me as well. Great photos, you have some nice stomping grounds :)

You say its not very stout, can you expand on that a bit? I also have a 66 and find it to be stout for its size. Is the blade alot thinner on the owl? Maybe a few comparison shots could help out. Obviously a 3.5 inch knife is not a tank but it should stand up to a little abuse, atleast in my eyes. It sure is a beaut with that bone. nice score

I really like that pattern. And a 3.5" equal end is just perfect for pocket carry. Now I'll have to go look at all the seller's sites to see what's available in one of them.

Thanks for this, I've been debating between the owl and a #66 as well; I'm sure I'll end up with both anyway....

Lovely.

If I had bought a White Owl with a clip instead of a spear blade, I would probably still have it.

I bought it for the grain of the ebony, but never warmed to the spear blade.

As always, your photography is suberb!

Doug, why didn't you like the spear? Do you generally dislike spears or was it just this spear? I like spears over clips, and was planning on getting the spear, but had also considered the #66. Dang choices and limited funds!

I'd also like expansion of not feeling like this is a stout knife.

I have way too many spear blades already, with multiple Victorinox knives in varying numbers of scales/tools. I have always preferred a clip blade to a spear, mostly for aesthetic reasons. So, when it came time to decide which knife had to go to fund another purchase, it was the White Owl.

Nothing at all wrong with the knife, and as mentioned the size (length and thickness) is very nice. But now that I have a Case 32087, that slender, single spring, blades opening on opposite ends knife is filled for me. So, even as tempting as they are (especially this one of jt's, and the autumn bone), I may not get another 68.

I just need to get one of these. I've been putting it off for no good reason and I haven't bought a knife since Blade.

When picking up and comparing the two knives there are obvious differences, but the biggest two would be weight, and thickness. The #66 Jack has two separate and thus the added thickness. Both knives have a very nice lockup with no blade play, but the style in which they get to that point tells me the White owl is just a little behind. There is a big difference in the pull strengths and when dealing with two knives of the same size, 3 1/2'', it just seems as though the #66 is a lot more stout.

I believe that both knives could handle a lot of work, but the #66 is just a little more field ready in my mind. That being said it lacks the overall class that the #68 White Owl has.

I'll try to get comparison shots up soon.

I'm actually giving my #66 away to a good friend, it's just not for me. It's a wonderful knife and I enjoyed using it, but it's on to a new and better place.

Good on you for gifting that lovely green 66! I was enthralled when you first posted pics upon its arrival.

Thanks for the follow up Johnny. I get what your sayin and the fact you are still keeping it really conveys that message. That Owl sure is nice to look at, thanks for the pics and comparison.

Right! You won't be disappointed either as this is both a fine pattern to look at and to use.

I chose a Tidioute version with Clip as I don't care for bails. The Primitive Bone on Johnny's knife shows exceptional markings and grain, beautiful stuff! I've got a 26 Pocket Sunfish in this and it's a real fondler:D:thumbup:

I just got a stag white owl in today. There is absolutely no snap when you close the blade. As a matter of fact it has to be pushed shut from about 1/4" open or so. Is this normal??

I'm certain it's not normal, maybe there is some debris stuck in there from the buffing process. I've had some grittiness in new knives that caused pretty weak snap, but flushing the joint out with some mineral oil usually does the trick.

The spring on my White Owl is more subdued then the rest of my GEC knives, but it has a snap and will close on it's on merit.
I think that maybe you should oil the joints, or try to just clean it to make sure there is no polishing residue left over from the factory.

I hope you like your's as much as I like mine.

I can tell you that if I had paid $90.00 for a pocketknife that wouldn't close by itself, it would be going back to where I got it.
