Trying to choose, Techno or Tuff?

Okay, so I know the answer is to get both and I know I'll end up with both eventually, but I can't decide on which one to pick up first.

I was going to pick up a Strider SNG. And while it's a great knife I've been looking at these two Spydies for a long time and have decided just to pick up a nice Spydie. Both have better steel than the s30v or CPM-154, though the BOS heat treat is the best. I also have examples of both of these steels in my accumulation and want something different.

The Techno has a good blade steel, small but tough, that awesome blue back spacer, and a low ride clip. I also love the look of full titanium handles. The thing is, I'm not sure I want to get something this small although it'd ride great with my Sebenza.

The Tuff has excellent blade steel, an awesome blade shape, a great handle with dimples for extra grip and I do love titanium and G-10. It also has the same amount of cutting edge that the Strider SNG has. I know it's a little bigger than the SNG, probably more comparable to the size of the SMF. But this knife has always been a great design in my opinion and I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I really love both and would likely end up carrying either with my Sebenza although I normally carry a smaller knife with my Large Sebenza. So I'm not completely sure which one to pick.

They're both made in Taichung Taiwan and this doesn't bother me at all. I own examples and have owned several other examples of the Taichung Spydies and they're excellent. They all have had better fit and finish than most of my more expensive USA made knives and on top of being amazing knives, the prices for what you get is just amazing.

So both would be a tough knife with good steel and materials, both have excellent fit and finish, and they're not that far apart in price.

Which one would you go for first?

From what you've said about both of them, I would say flip a coin.
I'm not a fan of the fuller on the tuff, so I would go with the techno.
But I would love to try some 3V...
Tails.

Since you're buying from a collector's perspective, buy the one that puts the biggest smile on your face.

You can write out a huge list of pros and cons and analyze every detail, but I think you need to just make a gut decision.
:D :)

I would personally get the Techno. The Tuff is too strange.

I've seen the Techno compared to the Small Sebenza, which is awesome because I was going to buy a Small Sebenza at some point.
So I'm leaning towards the Techno right now.
Really I buy from a users point of view. Though I have more knives than the average person, I wouldn't call it a collection lol.

I'm thinking I'll get the Techno first and then I'll go for the Tuff at a later date.

The Tuff being strange is fine for me, I like strange and the best thing about strange is that it normally works well lol.
Like the Spyderco Chokwe is strange to several people, and I bought one and LOVE it.

Still open to opinions.

another vote for the techno.

simply because the tuff doesnt appeal to me (aesthetically at least).

scratch that, i'd go for the spyderco brad southard flipper!

My thoughts exactly. The techno looks cool, but might be too small for me. The tuff does not appeal to me in the least. My Southard is officially on the way so I may be a bit biased but that would be my pick of the Taichung spydercos

I *fourth this. I liked my Tuff, but honestly from a users perspective CPM 3V is better suited to a fixed blade so it can really show you what it can do with that crazy impact resistance. The Techno is very cool, but a bit too tiny for my preference. My Tuff went back for a warranty issue and I used the credit to get a Southard flipper. It seems like a real beauty and will make a nice edc for a long time to come.

Just my opinion though.

So, to answer your question:
Southard
Techno
Tuff

I went Techno first, now going for southard then tuff.

I like the Southard and was thinking on it.
But I figured I'd get the ones that have been on my list first.
I'll probably pick up the Techno first.

Hey Blade! Shoot me an email. I have worked through this. I have great advice for you. aidansdaddy1733@gmail.com
Holding my first SnG as we speak. Breaking it in! Techno to my left. Southard on the way from CS! Get a hold if me sista!

If you're going to get both anyway, why not just use that cash and get the SnG? That's what I'd do at least- quality over quantity.

Email sent to you Patrick.

And Drop Point - That's the thing, I am not going to buy them both at the same time. And the money is not the issue. The issue is that I've been back and forth about these three knives. When handling the SNG and playing around with it, it's a quality knife and a really nice one, but in my opinion, I'm not sure the quality of it is over the Spydie's quality.

I hope I don't get shot down for saying that. It's just my opinion.

I wouldn't say the Striders are leagues ahead of the higher-end Spyderco's but I do think they are built a bit better. My SnG has PERFECT fit and finish and works beautifully. I also just like the design and feel of the SnG over those Spydies anyway. But again, that's just me. I don't think you can lose any way you go, but if you're dead set on those two, I'd get the Techno first since you said you had wanted a small Sebenza. I also personally don't like the craters all over the Tuff.

I love the Tuff, but it's a beast to open one-handed. It's taken me many repititions of practicing and cycling the knife through openings and closings to become proficient at it. It's a big, brawny folder and I love it. It's not the prom queen of knives - it's about function on this one, not looks.

If you don't have strong hands, I would not recommend the Tuff.

That said, I can't speak for the Techno. I am a Ti fan and am smitten with the looks of the Techno. It's not a knife I could see using based on the handle size and shape, and no choil is a bummer for me.

I guess it really just depends on your views.
I love how the SNG handles, it feels great in the hand and is a quality knife.
That said, I don't think it has the same amazing quality as my Sebenza when comparing the two and it's the same price.

That said, my Chokwe is on par with many higher quality knives, the same as my Air. I would compare the Chokwe to something twice its price.

I am a Spydie lover though. But I wouldn't say I'm biased either.

I really like the SNG, I just feel I can get the same quality in the Spydie knives.

I'd recommend two knives you didn't ask about (just kidding...).

I have the Techno and love it. I have maybe five folders kicking around and the Techno is a tough, cool looking slicing machine. I originally derided its design due to the blade thickness but that has nothing to do with its cutting power or finesse.

I also think that the Tuff has a lot of bulk for a short amount of blade. And if I want a short blade I might as well get a short knife, so the Techno works. I'm going to vote you get this one and carry it for a while to let it grow on you. It is not like a small Sebenza or like much of anything else for that matter - it reminds me more of Vox knives than anything. Check it out!
