Trying to choose the right blade

Paratrooper, make sure you get a knife sheath that is jump certified. This is very important. I know I am going to get yelled at by many posters here but here is the breakdown for carbon steel quality as per Crucible industries:

Cold work tool steels
• General purpose
&n— O1, A2, D2
• Improved toughness (impact resistance)
&n— S7, A9
• Improved wear resistance
&n— CruWear, M2
• High performance CPM
&n— 3V, M4, 9V, 10V, T15, 15V

This would put ESEE 5 using 1095 carbon steel at the bottom of the barrel for knife steel. SR-77 is really S7, which is noted as a very good knife steel and is in my opinion much better steel than ESEE 1095. If I had to pick the best carbon steel for a knife I would recommend CPM-3V. It is more expensive but is about as good as carbon steel is going to get when manufactured by a company with good credentials.

Here is one example:

You can do a search at KnifeCenter for all knives in carbon:

Good luck,

GP,

I actually ordered my Esee-5. I cant wait to receive it, im thinking about dying the micarta handles black or red or even tiger stripe with both. My sister is sending me the dye for it. do you know how to do the tiger striping?

Id also like to say i absolutely fell in love with the "ZT 0100" i love the bladed shape and everything about it, its perfect! i plan on getting that one for afghanistan and other deployments and using the esee for bushcraft/survival/camping still a great knife and cant wait for it. the only thing i dont like about the ZT is the sheath ive seen and heard very bad reveiws on it.

Congratulations on your new RC-5 Paratrooper!

There's plenty of sheathmakers right here on our forum if you go to the home page and in some search term for sheath, sheath for sale, etc.. :)
