trying to decide on which edc to buy

I fix computers so it's alot of opening blister plastic, cardboard the occasional harder plastic and pretty much everything else that gets thrown into my suburban life that needs doing. I'm currently carrying a Gerber Torch II. It's ok, but a little bulky for my taste. I thought I would hate the tanto blade and while I don't hate it I still would not prefer it for my EDC also I'm just not a fan of partially serrated as it's MUCH harder to sharpen.

So I did alot of research online and I initally was really interested in the benchmade 940, But now I'm torn between that and a Griptilian with either D2 or S30v.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm willing to spend money on a good product but not willing to go much higher than 200.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with either of those knives, and pretty much any good quality folder can open boxes and blister packs. It really comes down to your personal preference. What specific qualities do you want your edc knife to have?

My current knife will lose an edge in just a few days. I think it's mostly due to the 440c steel so I wanted to try a new steel. I'm looking for something with a good grip that's durable enough that I can take it on the 3-4 camping trips I take a year but won't look too aggressive when I'm at work. It's important to me that it's a clip folder because that gets alot less weird looks at work. I've noticed that a drop point knife will slice much better than my tanto. I think that's because of the curvature of the blade. I would like to stick with a 3.5" blade as that's what I'm comfortable with but my current blade dominates my entire right front pocket to the point that I have trouble getting to a pack of gum in there so something lower profile than the bulky knife I have now would be nice. Having a secure grip is really important to me just makes me feel much more comfortable using the tool. And finally it's important to me that it's american made.

You'll get a more secure grip with a griptillian. But i prefer the elegant looks of the 940. I'd also choose the s30v over D2 because it is easier in my experience to sharpen and takes a finer edge.

your Gerber Torch has 440A steel I believe, which is a lot softer than 440C. I really loved the Torch design when I had it like 5 years ago (Just recently found out its by Hinderer, and closely resembles his customs. if it were made it better steel it would be amazing...). but yeah look into Benchmade Griptilian/mini gripilian, and Kershaw knives in general. how big do you want the blade to be? thats a huge deciding factor.

If you open a lot of blister packaging, I'd would say a pointier tip would be nice. You would have more control in piercing since you won't be bearing down on the knife a lot. More control means less chance of damaging the items in the pack.

Yeah I guess that was kinda a wall of text. I'm looking for around a 3.5" blade.

I think that i would go with the blur. it rides very nicley in the pocket, is non threatening, comes in S30V, and is generally a lot of fun to play with. i am not sure that the tip would be the best for popping blister packs, though. another option would be the spyderco paramilitary 2. they come in s30v, and, while more expensive than the blur, might pierce a bit better.

I think the Blur might scare some people, being a/o. Most people can't tell the difference between a/o and a switchblade, especially if someone else is using it.

i know i'm dredging up an old thread but after a month of lurking around the forums and checking out the various different options and holding different knives I just placed an order for a paramilitary 2. I HATED the spidy hole when I first saw it and while I'm still not a big fan I'm defiantly a form over function person and the way it feels in the hand, especially with that finger choil (sp?) that really lets you choke up for detail work it's just a clear winner for me.

That's a common sentiment about spydies.
