Hey everybody, I'm trying to decide if Case's peanut will be the right choice for conservative edc. I know the peanut is tiny but if someone could post a pic of a peanut in hand for size reference I'd really appreciate it. Open and closed would be great. Thanks.

I can't post you a pic, but I do own several Case knives. While a lot of people here have peanut fetish(haha), I do not carry mine much. I prefer my medium stockman much more than my peanut. The peanut is to small for my taste. My medium stockman has more choices for me.

Don't have a pic, but I strongly recommend a Case peanut for conservative EDC. In fact, they're pretty legendary around these parts. Get one and you'll see why. Small, but VERY capable. Hopefully one of the lads will be along soon to post the pic you requested.

The peanut would be very conservative for edc, but if you want(or can accomodate) something a little bit bigger, you might want to look at the Small Texas Jack in Amber Bone. It is very similar to the peanut in shape, and has two blades, but is 3.5" closed instead of 2.?" like the peanut. I have the texas jack and I forget about it in my front jean pocket, but I haven't tried carrying it in a suit yet.

If no one can post a pic for size comparison, go to Case's website and look for a dealer close to you so you can go look at them, and handle them yourself. I'm not sure were you live, but you can go here to find a dealer http://www.wrcase.com/dealer_locator/

A peanut may or may not be a good edc for you. It all depends on so many variable factors, like type of dress-office or blue collar, size of hand, type of cutting likely to
be done.

For an office environment with suits or buisness casual attire, cutting jobs like opening mail, opening a package of new ink cartridge for the printer, an occasional cardboard box, it will do fine.

Wearing Carharts while working in the warehouse, you may want to look a little further. On the other hand most warehouse or shop workers have a sliding blade Stanley utility knife around.

And alot of it comes down to taste. Some people just like the pocket jewlery aspect of the peanut. When dressed up with nice bone stag or mother of pearl scales it becomes a very pretty little piece of kit. And it is a little knife.

There's only one thing for you to do-buy one. If you don't like it, you can give it to somebody who will. If you do like it, but still think its a tad small, you'll probably keep it anyways because there is something about a peanut. Even with that small stockman you may settle on, I'll bet you will still slip the peanut in another pocket once in a while.:)

Choice of a pocket knife is like that one thing Curley (Jack Palance) held up his one finger in City Slickers, everyone has to find it for himself.

But its fun trying all those different pocket knives!

I agree with JK. Just get one. Either way, you'll be happy you have one. No, it may not be right for you for EDC, but it's a very cool all-around pocketknife. And it can go. Trust me, I know. I've put mine to all sorts of use, from cutting thick lassos, to skinning the thick hide of an alligator, they are a small knife with big knife capability. However, something like a medium stockman is a very good choice as well. I used to own a case brown jigged delrin handled one, a medium stockman, and it was a worker. Unfortunately, I lost it at work somewhere, and then the Peanut came into my life. Still, you won't regret getting one.

I don't love the peanut. It's just too small for me. I have big hands, and I like a bigger knife. So for me...

EDC = Case 6292, 47 stockman or full size trapper
Conservative EDC = 6232, 62032 or old model 6207

3.5" is about as conservative as I get I guess.

There is something magical about the peanuts...
But as others have mentioned, I actually prefer something a little bigger.
Not because the knife is not capable, I have big hands and just like the feel of something a little bigger..
They sure are great for carryin though, you don't even know its in your pocket :D

I really appreciate the replies and insight. I have large mitts so a visual or two of peanut in hand would be of great help :D. I'm also looking at the 1/2 whittler which comes in just over 3". My semi-local dealer is back ordering alot of his stock, so this will be an internet purchase, no oppurtunity to handle.

i have a different brand peanut, the same size.

i also have large hands, i wear a XXL glove when i can find it.

i EDC the shrade in my pocket next to my opinel #10. i use it for light duty and jobs around people i am worried about scaring with my big bad opinel. mostly i carry it to whittle with, as the little pen blade is great for getting into contours.

both knives are the same size, and both are difficult to hold in my hand. they take up exactly three fingers, and feel very small in the hand. i have been able to work around this, but it is challenging.

the peanut is a great little razor though, and it can be made to work for larger jobs as well (as can be testified to by ElCuchillo and his alligator). i could even use the peanut for things like installing carpet etc. most of my cutting jobs are in wood though, and it is difficult to get a good strong grip to hog off material with such a small handle.

either way you should pick one up. they are a great little knife pattern. even if you find that it isn't right for an EDC knife, it makes a great sunday-go-to-meeting knife or dress knife for if you are wearing a tux.

I got one as a gift in November, and use it as my edc for work, where I where dress clothes. The peanut is small enough to carry in dress pants pockets without feeling like a big, heavy lump. It fits easily in a watch pocket, if your pants have one. It has the added advantage of not freaking anyone out if I use it.

Even if you don't have to dress up for work, it's a good one to have for those times you do dress up.

Thanks for that pic Siguy. I don't think I'd use it for anything as ambitious as skinning a gator, just those odd or not so odd moments of the day when something needs cut, opened or trimmed, so it should do fine. Thanks for the assists. Now, which handle material...

... added advantage of not freaking anyone out if I use it.

You know, I see that sentiment a lot on here, and I guess it has to do with where you live, but if it ever gets like that around here I'm moving. Frankly, people who freak out when you open a 4" long pocketknife.... well... they would kind of freak ME out.

My peanut is a Case pocketworn red bone one. I like it, but don't EDC it. I prefer my 3/5" Case stockman #6318 for use. For me, this stockman strikes a perfect balance between small enough in pocket and comfortable enough for me in use. BTW: I do not have large hands; I simply feel more comfortable with a medium-sized pocketknife no smaller than 3" closed at least.

But the peanut is a good little knife. I like the peanut much more than those typical small 2-blade pen knives where the blades pivot from opposite sides. The peanut feels more solid and comfortable to me than those; I like that fact its bolsters are rounded and I can orient it in my hands without looking.

the peanut is certainly a well known classic pattern. It should be easily carried in any business or casual attire. With that being said I think that there are several knives in that size range which could fit your needs. The fun part is buying them and trying them out.

Hey Elcuchillo I guess it could be called the "little big knife"

It is not a concern when I'm out and about where I live, but I work in a public school, which is a hotbed of excessive PC alarmism. Discretion there with pointy things is best.

Are you sure a critter didn't decide to eat it?:D

the peanut will do anything you need it to do and more. sweet knife. small but not too small.
