Had this knife for 20 years or so. Cannot figure out what it is. It's not a light knife -- weighs in at 230 g/8+ ounces. Any help would be appreciated.

Whatever that number is in the second pic (under the words Portland, Or.) is a number. That should be the model number.

Thanks for the responses. I will see what I can find about the Magnum Hunter. The number under Portland is 97223. Since that is a ZIP code for a Portland suburb, I never considered it to be a model number. Coincidence? Or part of an elaborate plan decades in the working just to confuse me? :)

Yep, Magnum Hunter. Made (iirc) from mid-late '70s to mid-late '80s. 440C blade. That's a nice older Gerber.

Without a doubt, it is a solidly built knife. Blade is a full 1/8" thick. I suspect it will never break. It's been in a box for years and I'm trying to decide what to do with it. It's a bit heavy for EDC. And I did look up that number--it really was just the ZIP code for Gerber after all and not the model number. So much for the conspiracy theories.

Definitely a Magnum Folding Hunter in 440C. I am fairly certain that is one of the later 1980's ones because I have a couple of them from the 1970's and they have the two visible brass pins on the wood handle slabs. The later models did not. Also, mine have the zebrawood handles and I am fairly sure the wood was changed in later years to rosewood, cocobolo or some other variety like shown on yours. Very stout knife made when Gerber was a well respected name in the cutlery world and not yet owned by Fiskars. I think those folders back then were Al Mar designs from when he worked at Gerber.

It's the zip code only. Has nothing to do with the model number.

That is a nice Gerber from the days before the acquisition by Fiskars. Gerber used to be one of the premium brands, before their acquisition.
