Trying to talk myself out of a Sebenza

The last two knives I have purchased were the 0561 and the Sm Sebenza, I have been very happy...

I'd say this hobby isn't about needs but wants. I bought three sebs in the past couple weeks because I wanted them not because I needed them. You wont regret it.

Small 21 is great for my office EDC needs. You can't go wrong with any CRK!

I agree with what everyone else says. If you want it, and you can afford it, buy it. I love mine. I actually now habitually carry two blades just so I can have my sebenza along with whatever other blade is currently in the rotation. It doesn't leave my side.

When you're getting into knives at this price range, it's really about want rather than need. And that's OK. I mean, as long as you're spending responsibly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with splurging on something special every once in a while. Only you can decide if the price is worth it to you. I can tell you that for me, it definitely was.

No one call tell you if you should buy one. We have no idea how much money you have, how much you love knives, or how much you would appreciate the best folder ever made. You'll have to figure that out on your own.

For most if not all of us at BF, "need" has very little to do with why we decide to buy a knife. If you like it, think you'll enjoy owning it (even if you don't using that much) and can afford it without upsetting your finances too much, I'd say go ahead and get it.

It took me a while to decide to buy a Sebenza and to be honest, I don't use it more than any of my other EDC knives (in fact I think my humble Endura gets a ton more pocket time). I still think it's great and I'm happy with my purchase.

There are other alternatives if you want a well made titanium framelock with a lower price tag. The Spyderco Sage 2, Protech TR-3 (the manual version is a ti framelock, I'm pretty fond of it), Bradley Alias and probably many others I haven't tried. However, if what you really want is to try out a Sebenza, getting something else will only delay the inevitable.

I was in the same position you were in. I bought a Spyderco Sage 2 instead. It's much cheaper and for a smaller knife, I prefer Spyderco's design over Chris Reeve's. I love the Large 21, but I prefer the Sage 2 over a Small 21.

I suggest anyone that has been around knives long enough to hear of the Sebenza, thinks they may like it, and can afford it, to try one out. It is arguably the gold standard in EDC folders and whether you like it or not can only be settled one way. I tried it, twice to be sure, and decided both times it is a fine knife, but not for me. I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I wasn't for sure, because that is the only way to settle if it is right for you or not.

If you really want a Sebenza and you can afford it go ahead and buy one. If you don't like it, sell it and buy something else. After buying a Sage 2 I don't plan on buying a Sebenza for a long time (or ever). Spyderco's S30V is great, and the titanium alloy is the same used for Sebenza's. The tolerances aren't as tight, but for me it's not a problem because it opens and closes smoothly, locks up solidly with no blade play in any direction, has a nicely centered blade, even grinds, it cuts things quite well, and it costs less than half what a Sebenza costs. Personally if I'm going to buy a $400 knife I'd rather get a custom than a production model, but that's just my own preference. Buy what you want and can afford. Use what you buy.

Excellent suggestion.

thanks, never personally handled the sage 2, messed with a 1 before. But from what i can see the sage 2 is based off of chris reeves designs especially since spyderco outfront says it has a Reeve integral lock. I cant imagine it really being any less quality then the CRK, the CRK price comes from the fact that its hand done and has much more small details in it doesnt it?

There is very little risk to the decision, so buy the Sebenza. At worst you'll realize like I did that it's not the knife for you, at which point you can easily sell it for only a very small loss.

As Nike used to say, just do it. ;)

I agree. I'm looking at picking up a small left hand Sebenza when I can afford to do so and I know that I'll little problem reselling it if for some unforeseeable reason I don't like it.

I have a Sage 1. And although the Sage 2 is an excellent suggestion, i am just looking for something different than the Sage series. I love my sage 1, its in my pocket every day. But have decided to try out the smal Sebenza. Im pretty sure I will love it and it will start a dangerous infatuation, lol. But, If not, then ill lose a couple bucks and be back to square one with a little more information an experience. Thanks for ALL the input.

there is also the bradley alias 2. Thats like the lower spectrum but still very high quality cloest thing to a sebenza you can get in a regular production knife imo

I purchased one of the first Sebenzas made. Feeling all patriotic I sold it to a soldier. I'm glad it found a good home but I truly regretted selling it. After many many knives later I realized that I had to come back to it. I just received my new large 21 two days ago and it was "born" on March 11th. It's a lot of money but until you carry one for a while and use it you just cannot possibly understand.

tell us what you think of it when you get it, I would be interested to know. I was totally opposed to buying one until I held one at a knife show... and it hasn't left my pocket since.
