TSA and Fire Starter?

Any one know the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations (actual at the gate policy) for carrying a fire starter rod, specifically the RAT Fire Kit on-board? I assume checked baggage wouldn't be a problem. I almost hate to ask the question....

i doubt most people even know what a ferro rod is, heck if its on your keychain and doesnt contain a powdered substance its probably fine, ive had my baggage scanned at a government building and didnt relaize until after that i had 2 folding knives in it and they didnt even notice, these guys dont exactly pay the closest of attention if you throw it in your carry-on it should be no problem

I've heard of plenty of guys who carry the BSA Hotsparks on their key rings doing just fine. I doubt they'd give you much trouble.

I got the Izula kit with the small rod - I also doubt that rod would be noticed. The RAT fire started is larger , a different type of material, and with the storage end? My concern is that it would become a noticible 'thing' to be checked out by TSA. Sure wouldn't want to have to drop that :grumpy: !
Thanks.

Personally, I wouldn't take the chance. How do you answer if they ask what it is? With the storage space, the overall size, I think questions would come up.

You are going to stand there in the middle of a crowded airport security check-point and say "that" to guys wearing rubber gloves ?

If a cigarette lighter is against the rules then I would think any device that is capable of starting fires would be not allowed. But that is a guess. I don't know any TSA folks. Mike

It's not specifically on the list of banned items. :D

That being said it is a rather large contrivance to try sneaking on with you I guess. :)

I think that it would be best to check any RAT Fire Starter (again I would certainly hate to give it up at a security checkpoint). Besides any trip to a place that I need a fire starter is hopefully going to include other items that would have to be checked anyway. Thanks for everyones input and comments.

it doesnt fall under the prohibitited item list. believe me i know

They only hang up I could see is that they may think the RAT fire starter is a kubaton or some type of impact weapon. Especially with the skull logo. It looks evil!!! Run away!

It's a homeopathic Hemorrhoid treatment and storage/applicator.

I once got a fire starter through Phoenix Sky Harbor Int A/P. The Mg and flint rod are attached the same fashion as the Izula kit, except the whole thing is attached to an antler point. Also the Mg & flint are considerably larger than the one supplied with the kit. Maybe I just got lucky with they guy I had at the gate...

Can't see why it would be a problem ... aren't common lighters allowed for carry on ?

Good point but the look on their faces would be priceless. I bet they would drop the firestarter before you finished the sentence.

What can I say, I have a sick sense of humor.
