TSPROF Kadet vs Hapstone R2

Was about to place my order and was interested in the Venev Ursa set. I read that they need to be flattened so was researching it as I have never had to flatten Diamond stones or use silicon carbide.

Got confused on which grits I would need. Emailed Gritomatic and they recommended F120, 220 and 400 for the Ursa stones. What they recommended, was different than the chart recommendation on the silicone carbide page.

The 220 is also out of stock, otherwise my order would have already been placed.

The rating for the Ursa stones are:

F80 + F150
F240 + F400 OCB
F800 OCB + F1200 OCB

I have seen Gritomatic mention flattening of Venev stones, but with the ones I received from them it was not necessary at all. They may perhaps still have old information on their site with first generation Venev stones from years back or mentioning it just to cover all their bases, not sure.

What may help a little bit is conditioning them with a nagura just to open up the top layer in case there has been any deposits from the manufacturing process, but even that I haven't found not to be crucial. The ones I've received have been flat and ready to go as purchased.

They also sell big bench stone versions (Phoenix and Dragon series) of the Venev stones, and perhaps those need some basic flattening but I can't comment on that because I don't have any of those.

Yep, they work perfectly fine on the Hapstone.

Gritomatic sells Kangaroo strops if you like Kangaroo. Their regular bovine strops are very nice too. Gritomatic has great quality control on the leather they use, all the strops I've ordered from them have been superb.

FYI, Gritomatic also sell Venev diamond paste which work very well on a leather strop.

It's wax based, so a good tip after you've applied the Venev paste to a strop is to heat it up with a hairdryer so the wax melts, partially penetrate and evaporate, leaving a very nice layer of diamond paste on the surface of the leather.

If you don't warm it up after applying it, it flakes off easier. There is no mention on their website of applying it and then heating it up, but trust me it works very well when applied this way.

I think it's a good choice that you'll be happy with.

That is strange yes, I know the Hapstone systems are popular and sell out often but maybe Gritomatic is just doing stock taking or working on their kits, maybe worth emailing them about it to just confirm.
Also, keep in mind that Hapstone is made in Ukraine, right where Russia is bombing.
