Looking to pick one of these up in the nearish future. Wondering which is the better chopper. Anyone got/had both and wish to chime in?

Cheers!

Probably won't be much help to you. But, I have a Garth thinned out TTKZ and a cbt MOABOLO. Thinned out TTKZ beats it. I'd imagine a non cbt MOABOLO and a factory TTKZ would be more evenly matched. But who knows,,,, :)

Both are great choppers. I realize that this may not be much help, but get the one that speaks to you more because you can't go wrong with either. For me personally, I prefer the Moabolo of the two, but if you want to go all in get a MOAB.

MOABOLO looks like an absolute beast. I would be suprised if TTKZ could out chop it

I've been meaning to get my TTKZ thinned out. Back when the Custom Shop was still taking orders, Garth said he'd do it for $150, but that was four years ago. I imagine it would be more now, and that's a necessary mod. I don't have a MOABOLO to compare it to, but as it is, it's nowhere near as good a chopper as a FBM LE.

"Oooh, so sorry, but no. The correct answer to your question was, Who is Huck Fin? Who is Huck Fin. Yes, that is the correct answer. Please try again..." :p :D

Hmm. We should ask Garth if that's still possible.

Would like to get one thinned,

They're both great. I kept the TTKZ . . . But I imagine I'll pick up another MOABOLO at some point. It really comes down to the edge/shoulder geometry.

Either way, both knives require a strong grip, some strength, muscular endurance, and stamina to effectively use it for any extended period of time as a main chopper.

You really can't go wrong with either one.

Thanks for your input guys - i have few more questions and comments below

Basically i'll use the knife in my camping backpack. I was previously using a NMFBM but sold it. Used a TGLB for a while, definitely does the job and i love the knife but i want something bigger again.

Obviously weight is an important factor but not the end of the world as my pack is usually pretty light anyway. I have always had my heart set on a MOAB so i might just save for it but the MOABOLO's recurve is dead sexy and i'm beggining to itch for a Kukri..

Now, my question:

Does a CBT knife have a thinner edge than stock FFG on the same knife? MOABOLO for example?

Cheers everyone :)

I'd love to see pics of your thinned TTKZ. How thin did you go? :)

There is also the option of the BB13 if weight is a factor and you are willing to wait until next year to have it.

MOAB, MOABOLO and TTKZ. All beautiful beasts but i'm kinda leaning towards the TTKZ..hmmm..it's just so sexy

Yep, another reason i am leaning towards the TTKZ is because i've got a couple BB13's on order that are pretty much a bigger MOABOLO with Res-C!

It's really all about the edge geometry.

Geometry cuts. Geometry cuts. Geometry cuts. What I tell you three times is true.

To complicate matters, the term 'TTKZ' is almost certainly not specific enough to properly describe any given knife. Look at that pic above. There seem to be 4 "TTKZ", right? But only one is marked 'Test Team Edition' Just regarding those, each was numbered. We don't know if there were differences among that cohort. Were some better choppers than others? Only Jerry knows. That was probably the point of Test Team. Mine was crappy until Garth fixed it. Then it matched my Gen 1 CGNMFBM with a reprofiled edge in chopping ability. Back to the pic; those other three knives that look like a TTKZ ... do they have the same edge geometry as mine? Who knows? Do they all chop the same? Who knows?

In short, the scientist in me says that there is no simple answer to the question.
