Tuff Cloth

Dannyc -

It's not just you, but it seems to be a "guy thing". I like the smell - it reminds me of tools and well maintained equipment. My wife, on the other hand, gags and practically runs from the room if she comes in when I'm using a Tuff-Cloth.

Different strokes, I guess.

Hoppe’s #9 blends well with the aroma of the Tuff Cloth. A few drops of #9 on the cloth, then apply at the pulse point on the wrist, and at the nape of the neck.

Whitebear,

Hmm... I dunno... The smell doesn't remind me of well-oiled tools... more like "clay" .. you know, clays like what Gumby was made of.. hehehe...

Howard,

Right...

The pulse and the nape generates enough body warmth to stimulate the aroma, huh? lol... I bet you'd attract all types of sexy knives that way...

The Tuff-Cloth protectant is non-toxic but has not been approved by the food and drug guys as safe for human consumption. It is probably safer than eating a Big Mac though.

Greg, I only use a Marine-Tuff cloth on my knives when I put them away in the evening after cleanup. I have used them out in the winter in the snow and the ice including going on hikes when it was snowing and filled up the sheaths that the knives were in. This is with D2, O1, 5160, and 1095.

Mark has said (and numerous people that I have talked to have confirmed it) that the protectant in the cloths is 100% until it is removed. That means that you can wipe a blade down and store it for years with no worries. If I was doing something that I knew was scraping the coating off (like cutting metals), and it was wet or just really humid I would probably clean the blade and rewipe it with the Tuff-Cloth whenever I took a break. How long you can go and such greatly depends on the conditions that you work in. It is dirt cheap though ($10) and worth experimenting with as it is definately a lot easier to work with than a bottle of mineral oil (which does taste better though).

I see there are still a lot of questions regarding mineral spirits. Mineral Spirits is a type of paint thinner, there are several. As for brand names we find that this varies throughout the country and of course world. Here in the Northeast we use SCL Odorless Mineral spirits.
Sorry for all the confusion. When we developed the product, the federal and state governments had not yet gone crazy with requirements for labeling chemicals. Now it is a very different story. A number of states have imposed their own regulations and distributors have responded with label changes in order to comply.

Just about any mineral spirits will do the trick, just don't let them sell you turpentine.

Wiping excess TUF-GLIDE with either TUF-CLOTH is fine. TUF-GLIDE is compatible with both. We try to encourage folks to use TUF-GLIDE sparingly. Thinner is better. You can also use TUF-GLIDE to rejuvenate the cloths.

When using a TUF-CLOTHed blade to cut food simply rinse the blade before using. Then wipe again when you get the chance. Because the protection bonds you really don't have to worry about transfer.

Thanks for all your support. As of last week 17 knife companies endorse and recommend Sentry's TUF Products. New additions include Cold Steel and CRKT.

Mark could you please describe the method of rejuvenating the Tuff Cloth with Tuff Glide. For example percentages of Tuff Glide to Mineral Spirits.

Thanks,
LD

LD,
Sorry I didn't respond sooner to your question on the rejuvenation of TUF-CLOTH using TUF-GLIDE. (Point, use TUF-GLIDE or mineral spirits, not both.)

Really simple- add as much or as little TUF-GLIDE as you like. The more you add the "wetter" the cloth will be and more material will be transferred to the surface you are wiping. More material will add to the drying time and some customers choose to buff off the excess to restore a "shine".

Perhaps David Rock can comment on whether Superman likes his TUF-CLOTH on the dry side...

I hear Superman likes it dry....no buffing necessary.
