I have a Tuffram Civi SE. I like it and it seems like a great dedicated SD knife if the chips were down. Is the newer G-10 version a better knife or is the Tuffram better? I know better is a vauge statment. My Tuffram has Gin-1 steel so I am sure the newer G-10 has better steel but considering that I never intend on actually using the knife unless I am put in some kind of bad situation, I don't think that matters.

Collectability aside, which would you choose for the intended purpose it was designed?

G-10 version draws easier from wherever clipped, unless you modify the neoprene nub under then clip of Tuffram version. For its purposes, you'll be fine with whatever steel - it's the shape that matters most. Other than that, personal preferrence.

That is a good point. The rubber clip does seem to grab a lot. What about the grip of each model? I know G-10 is pretty grippy but the aluminum and rubber seems more hand filling.

Good questions... I have been wondering the same. I have 2 SE Civilian Tufframs and am looking for a PE version. It seems that the Tufframs are more collectible, but I don't know which is better. I like the grip of the Tuffram better, but the one that I carry has worn considerably on the rubber inserts. All in all both are great knives and carry what you like because everybody's situation is different. For instance I like the stiffer draw because it seems to stay where I put it no matter what I am doing even if I am upside down I know it isn't going anywhere!

The Tuffram version is more collectible, and as such is going to cost more. For a knife that in all likelihood will only ever be used once, and then will be broken, I'd vote for the cheapest and easiest replacement, the G-10 version.

Leave the Tuffram in the safe.

10-4 on the use once as it is meant to be used and break (Tuffram). Got to send one back to Golden on my dime for new blade. I still love em though!

This all brings back a memory of a DC Knife Knuts Luncheon in a private room of a Chinese restaurant where somebody had brought a (very rare?) plain edged Tuffram Civilian and was passing it around. One person was not careful in his handling of it and sliced his hand so that it bled like Hell. We were all putting paper napkins on it and applying pressure to an arterial point to stop the bleeding and there was this waiter standing there. He was so shocked that all he could do was stand there with his eyes popping out and his jaw somewhere down around the floor. Finally, one of the guys went downstairs to find the manager to see about getting a first aid kit.

When we got the blood stopped and cleaned up, the cut was not really as bad as it had initially looked and the fellow was so impressed with the effectiveness of the knife that he bought it off of its owner right then and there. :)
