A really good friend knowing my love for fully serrated Police and other spydies has sent me these Tufram coated spydies. I know these are the earlier ones in the red boxes. Any info on the coating and the knives(Worker and Police) would be appreciated.
According to Spyderco's "Across the Years" timeline, the Tufram versions of both the Worker and Police were introduced in 1993. I'd guess the steel on both is GIN-1, although probably marked as G-2 if marked at all. All I know about TUFRAM is that it's a patented coating for aluminum, available in a few colors and that it was one of several coating which Spyderco used over the years. It seems more "paintlike" to me than Almite, but may just be more opaque.

I see that your friend put some "traction tape" on the clip on that Police model. Good choice, as that is one slippery puppy. I had one just like it that I bought in the late 80s. Blade steel was marked on the blade as G2. Unfortunately that is one I sold several years ago. Nice knife and the traction tape will help keep you from cutting yourself if you ever use the thing.
The Worker and Police made it through canada customs and showed up today!
If there is anything better than a Spydy in the mail it is 2 spydies in the mail!
First impressions ,1 CBXer was not kidding when he said the traction tape was a good idea these are some slippy spydies. The grip tape works wonders though.
They both look the same anthracite colour in the photo but the worker is actually much darker and is as a very attractive colour. They are very very light weight! The Police feels strange because I am so used to my stainless version. The Worker feels about the same as my Caly3 carbonFibre and they make a great matched set. The Workers edge would be identical to the Caly3's in PE and the dark tuffram coating looks terrific.
I usually prefer plain edge but for Police and big fighters like the Massood and the Civilian I like the serrations. The Worker says Gin-1 stainless and the police Gin-2.
I was wondering if they have any collector value or can I use them without feeling bad.
I don't really need the Police as I have a stainless one but the Worker is really cool.
I don't want to scratch up something that is rare though.
Sorry Rick i am a compulsive trader but these have some real sentimental value.
That Tuffy police would make a great EDC because it is so nice and light.
I am also in love with the Worker as well. it shows exactly whats cool about the spyderedge because it looks just like a velociraptor tooth.
It is also very similar to my Caly3 CF/ZDP. The Worker blade edge is identical other than being serrated and obviously it is not a leaf shape. When you put the Worker blade over the caly3 blade though the edges are exact.
You can really see how well thought out the caly3's handle ergos are when compared to the very similar worker. The caly3 has that perfectly designed choil. i love the tuffram handle both it's lack of weight and its great colour and especially the lanyard hole.
talking about tufram coated spydies, i got a tufram cricket in GIN-1
any info on manufacturing year? box is white with japanese lettering.
got it for 50(!)usd on eBay
Cool ,I am not anywhere close to an expert but it sounds like you got one for the Japanese market. They sometimes get cool stuff we don't. Also I think anything foreign is sort of exotic and interesting.
What colour is your cricket and do you have any photos?
I have been really liking my Worker and it is getting a lot of EDC time.
I would like to see the Worker come back at least in name and function.
Hi Unsub i have a tuffram worker as well & agree it is sweet. The tuffram police is very nice as well ,great score!
both are in fantastic shape for their age!
all the best ,regards,Rick.
