I am on the fence with the sizes of thumb studs that I could use on a folder.

.25" diameter or ~3/16" diameter?

Edited: See Post #3 for pictures.

Make them proportionate to the size of the knife. Smaller knives get smaller ones and larger knives get larger ones. You also need to take into account the distance from the scale in the closed position, the distance from the front of the knife as it operates and the height based on the thickness of the scales.

Ok, so here is my dilemma, I can't make my own thumb studs.

But I really don't like the thumb studs that I find that are 3/16" diameter.

So here is the plan with a 1/4" stud:

How about now?

Why can't you make your own? Before I bought a lathe I used to turn the diameter in a cordless drill, just make sure to drill and tap them before you turn them down.

You can also modify existing ones, grab them in a drill press and use files to cut grooves.

Its not that bad. Customizing thumb studs just adds a little extra to the knife. Kinda like modifying AKS pivots to make them look great.

If you do decide to make/ customize your own, show us how it goes. :D
