I am looking to HT an 8" blade.

I dont want to have a hammon so my O/A torch wont work...

The options I have are.....

Building a trench out of fire bricks to contain mt heat from the o/a torch. Heating the whole blade so I wont have a hammon.

Constructing a brick forge and use my turkey burner to try to reach temperature.

Buy one of those weed burners / ice melters and fire bricks....

What option is the quick fix. I do want to build a forge but I have the bricks now so I tought I'd just use those.....

Weed burner and a thick piece of black pipe would be the quickand easy way. Take a 1.5 inch black pipe (as long as it wide enough to hold the blade), I then cut a whole in the side of the pipe so that the weed burner could come in from the side. Let it heat up and get to work. You may have to slide the blade in and out some to get a even heating. It has worked for me the pipe will not last forever but untill I get something better it isn't to bad. Now I wish I had more time to play with it :( . Hope that helps. Mark

Make a simple charcoal forge out of split white fire bricks and furnace cement. The charcoal provides a very good heat... good for the metal, or lets just say gentler to the metal. You'll grow to love the soft sweet smell of the charcoal, and the way it slowly soaks heat into the steel. Charcoal has worked for metal crafting for what... 2000 years right?

If I was you I would wait and see if anyone else has anything to say on the matter. I trust what alot of people here more then I trust myself some times. :D ;) :p Good luck.

It's only an 8" blade (as opposed to a 39" sword)
I'd build a stacked brick forge and either use charcoal or just buy a weedburner and fire it from the side. Make the forge as small as possible because you need interior heat, not spot heat. Heat the forge a long while before putting the blade in and try to avoid direct heat on the blade. (don't torch it)
keep moving the blade around sort of like roasting a hot dog on a stick and get an even heat!
I've heat treated on lots worse setups.

I may just try to make a burner but buying the 20 dollar.....ready to go weed burner sounds user friendly :p

I just need to keep the flame out a ways right?

Also, WOULD THE TURKEY BURNER I HAVE WORK?

Now were talking free ;)

Also, WOULD THE TURKEY BURNER I HAVE WORK?

I doubt it would get hot enough without buying a new regulator....$25.00 to $35.00

I'd go with the real charcoal fire, all you need is a gentle blown air source for it, first and the stack of bricks weed burner set-up second.

Oh Hell....I am just going to build a darn forge of some sort......

Will the hard fire brick retain enough heat to stack them up and stick in a blower?

sure it will
just heat the whole blade, soak and full quench..I do it all the time
either way, Hamon or not..

Peter what is "HWOTHD"???

:footinmou Holy Water On The Hanover Deputy. :footinmou

:footinmou Get pulled, hand him the blade to hold, do not turn your back or he will shoot you (only if you have been drinking), sprinkle Holy Water on him at the rate of 1 oz per 10 pounds of Deputy and you should get a sustained temperature of 2000F.

Reduce the water appropriately for temperature. :footinmou :footinmou

Hi Brian,
hard firebricks are terribly inefficient. You'd be well served to line that brick box with some Inswool. Or, if you're looking to build a quick and inexpensive forge, just make a double coffee can forge...sounds silly, but it works! All you need for a forge is a heat source and some *good* refractory. Heck, Jason Cutter's forge is nothing more than a piece of sheet metal of some kind wrapped into a cylinder and lined with ceramic fiber blanket coated with a top sealer.

I'll tell you what, if you're looking to get something made on the cheap, I've got some 6# density ceramic fiber blanket (I only sell 8# density on my website anymore) I'll make you a deal on...shoot me an email offline...

Brian the refractory blanket in coffe cans is quick and works great, but you will need to cover the blanket to keep fibers down, i have some satanite i can send you, maybe we can trade for you to make me another stencil :D let me know and i will try to get it out to you real soon. here are some pics of my coffee can forge, i built me a verticle also but use the coffee can one the most:

works great so far, although i did put in a temp probe so i could set the temp more accurately.

ahhh....information overload :p :D :D

I love this place.....

Dan,
What size tip on the O/A? I have a rosebud.....

terry,

Let me get my burner going and see what I can dig up here. I may just get some stuff down the road since its close but thanks so much for the offer. I need to get my blades ground first...man I hate trying to make my brain swith gears when my transmition keeps slipping...

Darren,

There is a place near me that has 4" thick Safeing insulation or Rockwell insulation. I may have my spelling off but theu said it would work well for what I need. Do you know anything about this stuff?

Thanks a million guys....

Nope, never heard of the stuff. Just make sure it is a high temperature ceramic fiber blanket that will go to at least 2300 degrees F. Also, Be sure to coat whatever you use with Satanite or Satanite/ITC-100.

:)
