Turkey Day in the woods

I spent the day deer hunting in the Adirondacks. No luck. After I had lunch (notice the can of smoked Vienna Sausages!), I decided I better post a photo. I forgot to stick my Busse Game Warden into the tree first!

Luckily, the BFWSS patch on my Blackhawk Opsec4 pack provides on-topic content, sort of.

I keep a Vic Farmer in my pack. It always gets used to whittle a hophornbeam or maple twig for spearing the Vienna Sausages. You can see the twig stuck under my hat on the back of my pack. Even though I wear a fixed blade while hunting, it has become ritual to dig out the SAK to whittle my sausage-sticker.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving.

(PS: No, that's not a .223. It's a 6.8SPC carbine)

Great stuff desmobob! Nice little rifle too.

How ya liking that 6.8? A friend of mine has a 6mm PPC bench rifle that is one of the sweetest shooting tack drivers I've ever seen. The 6.8 and 6.5 Grendel came out about the same time. The 6.5 is very close to the 6 PPC (both based on the 7.62X39 IIRC) so the 6.5 really piqued my interest for a while. I didn't follow through and am still looking for my one EBR.

The 6.8 SPC is still high on the list. That set up you have is about perfect. Can't say I'd set mine up any different.

Thanks for the pic.

"No luck" grrrr. You used up your quota of luck just getting the opportunity to be out there with that. I covet. ;-)

You did too have good luck. You didn't have to spend the day with at your in-laws or some such rot. Happy Thanksgiving.

Rupestris,

That little carbine shoots like a dream! I was very pleasantly surprised to get MOA and sub-MOA groups with a couple of different handloads. Impressive from a 16.5" barrel semi-auto....

I also have an EOTech sight for it on a quick-release mount. Depending on the hunting conditions, I can quickly and easily pop on the EOTech or the 1.5-6 x 42 scope.

The 6.8SPC uses a shortened and necked-down .30 Remington case. I'd say that gives it decent deer hunting ancestry. :)

My only beef is with the compensator. It's way too loud. I only fired it once without hearing protection before I decided to wear some "noise filter" type plugs for hunting.

baldtaco-II and Wildmike,

You're right. I guess I was lucky. Being out there doing what I wanted to do and using the gear I love was something to be thankful for.

Stay sharp,
desmobob
