Here's the deal...

I have a 1998 Kershaw Ken Onion Random Task 1510ST that I bought new back then. It's one of Kershaws first Ken Onion Assisted Opener models.
They are kinda collectible now. One sold NIB on Ebay back in May 09 for $195. That's more than new MSRP.

Somewhere during the last 10 years I put it in an old fishing box and subsequently thought I lost it. I just found it.

It is still in excellent condition except for some odd reason on one side, 1 of the 4 screws in the G-10 scales is missing and on the other side all 3 screws are missing. It obviously happened while I EDC'd it back in the late '90s because I noticed it then but didnt think much about it.

The scales are still completely attached to the liners as if glued.(maybe they were) but having only 3 of 7 screws cant be good.

I just talked to Kershaw Warranty and they said because its discontinued (since 1999) they couldn't ship me any screws.
They did however say if I wanted to return it they would send me a free new Kershaw of comparable value...of my choice. This knife was $120 - $175
back then so they told me I could get a Blur or whatever I wanted.

So...three questions:

1) Does anyone know if any other models screws work with this knife?

2) Does anyone know of any aftermarket guys that could do some custom work and get screws to work on this?

and...

3) Should I take Kershaw up on their offer of "send it back and just tell us what model you want"...?

Here's an Ebay link for some info on the knife:

Here's a pic of the model(not my knife):

If you like it then keep it. Screws are not proprietary, and findimng some should be easy enough.

But I am suprised, if you send that knife to Kershaw they wouldn't just replace the screws for you? If they have it in hand then they should be able to figure out which screws from their inventory to use to fix it.

Take one of the screws out and take it to a jeweler and/or machine shop. They should be able to tell you the size you need, or make you some new ones.

Great that you found that puppy! They're wonderful knives!

Yeah...I thought the same thing. I didnt specifically ask her about using another models screws(talked to the warranty manager) but she just said they didnt have those anymore and mentioned getting a new one.

It does seem they should have something that would work. They are obviously small and tapered all they way down.

Reason I asked here was I figured someone may know for certain if another models work.

The screw that they used was a special screw that I believe they only used in that model, once they discontinued the model they probably didn't keep those screws in stock.

Paintballer,

Got this from one of those links...

"if you guys are familiar with the 1510, you know that the six little body screws are offset from one side of the handle to the other so that all six go through both of the liners....BTW, PG I think you are correct. I believe they were very small spline drive screws, but they were stripped when they got to me either way."

So, maybe Warranty was right in that those screws just arent around anymore.

Oh well, also in those links were some other options.

Its a very nice knife, my friend picked one up on the bay a few months ago. Unless it has some personal value I would take kershaw up on their offer, that is if you like any of their new designs.

What SPXtrader said.

I cant believe they are some special thread of screws, you should be able to fix it if you look enough , find the screw size then google will be your bestest bud to find those screws.

I like the old Random Task...but I'm not real nostalgic. Knives are users for me.

I do like some of Kershaws newer stuff.
Specifically:

NRG solid G10
Lahar VG-10 G10
Avalanche S30V
Tyrade G10
Leek G10 stonewashed S30V
Blur S30V

i had the same knife and same problem.sent back to factory;they never got knife.lucky that i insured it for 100.00.this was quite a time back, customer service told me this theft occured often.

They were spline drive screws. I had a random task back in the day, and I had to get replacement screws for the clip. I forget who made the tool, but I had to call up the manufacturer to get one, along with the new screws from Kershaw. I also lost my knife years back.

Nothing better than a new knife with new steel :D that's a nice older kershaw you got but in this case I would take kershaw up on their offer, not to often a knife maker does something that nice.

If it was me I would go in this order.
G-10 tyrade
S110V shallot
lahar
blur S30V

I have a mini. My screws, i think, were 1/80 x 1/4" in length. I got them at Ace Hardware in the nuts & bolts section. I may have had to shorten them:confused:. Hope this helps. This is for the handle and not the clip. clip screws are probably 2/56. I don't know, I don't like tip-down, so I didn't use them.
