Turn it in...or keep it?

Who says they have to be the correct size screws? You could find someone to tap the handles for larger screws, and pick something common, or cool, or whatever. You have plenty of options, as said already. Keep the knife, and enjoy it.

You could send it to someone like Tom Krein, and have him redo the screws, and as it will no longer be "stock", you may as well upgrade to a Kreined edge, while you're at it.:D

But, if you really don't have any emotional attachment to it, trading in would be like getting a free new knife out of the deal, and you can't go wrong with that. I'd recommend the Tyrades in G10, if you can get one from them. They may be all out to distributors, and dealers, though. Or you could throw some extra on top of your "credit" and get something way cool, like the new Speedform.

Either way, you found something of value, which you had thought was lost. That's cause for celebration any day. Congrats!

Daniel

I'm sorry but that is BULL SHIT!

Just because its a few years old they won't support it, but will give you a new knife... I think you just need to throw a bigger fit!

I love the BLUR, but you have a COOL knife that is no longer made! If they continue to not give you the screw you need I would say screw them! I would then find a similar screw and fix it myself...

Woah Mr. Krein I think there may have been a misunderstanding some where. I don't believe the problem is that the knife is discontinued, I believe the problem is that they no longer stock that type of screw, spline drive screws. They also offered to give him a brand new knife for his old knife. I have never had a problem with Kershaw's customer service, if you ask me they are top of the line. They sent me a whole set of screws for my RAM and a new catalog free, not to mention communication with them is great.

I am Sorry.... you are probably correct! I will retract my statement without editing it. My apologizes to Kershaw's customer service.

I would keep it.

Does anyone know what size the screws are?? Maybe I have some that would fit.

In one of the links I posted earlier in the thread I believe it gives screw size and types, I'll go check for you.

Edit: no lengths, but I did find this

Pivot Screws - 5/64" Hex
Clip Screws - .048" 6 flute Bristol Spline
Scale Screws - .035" Hex

The knife is definitely worth keeping. Titanium liners, polished G-10 handles and a CPM440V (aka S90V) blade, plus one of the first production Ken Onion AOs.

The handle/scale screws are stainless "0-80 x 3/8" Flat Head Socket Cap Screws". The length might need to be measured a little better than my cheap micrometer can measure. I found a couple places on-line thru a Google search that sold boxes of 100 for around $10 or $15. Haven't ordered any yet, but probably will sometime soon.

Tom, KO said that they used the Bristol Spline drive and small 0-80 hex screws because they didn't want just anyone taking the knife apart when they had just come out with Speedsafe. The later versions switched to Torx screws, I believe.

Here's a pic of the model(not my knife):

That particular knife looks vaguely familiar. ;)

To make it original , it will be hard to find the exact screws ( not impossible though ) , as long as the thread pitch isnt something special , check out a real hardware store ( not Lowes , Home Ghetto , etc ) , something with a real screw selection. I bet you can find something to fit , perhaps 1-80 , 00-80?

check out smallparts.com

The Amazon order's thru smallparts, good call.

Hah! Is that yours?

I did mention that it wasnt my exact knife...I just didnt have as good a pick to post.

:D

It might be, the Costco microfiber towel is what I used for a background a while back. If it is, I don't mind it being used to help out your quest for replacement screws, since I'm on the same quest. :D

Well..thanks for all the info and leads on those screws.

I knew the knife had titanium here and there and the G10 looks cool done that way. The steel is great too. The blade shape is AWESOME. Wish I saw it more on other knives.

But...although I used it pretty hard for many years I never felt real secure with it. It reminds me of my SOG. The blade is thin. I much prefer alot of the newer knives thick blade especially at the pivot and spine.

I went ahead and sent it in to Kershaw. I wanted them to have it in hand and to see if they could actually put some screws in. I mean heck, they make knives.
If they can't I'll just as soon have them send me a new knife...I gave them a wishlist. If none of them can be had...I'll get the knife back and look to some of the options listed here.

Thanks.

This was more of a gentleman's folder than some of the beefier knives out there today. You should have plenty of good choices at a similar price point to the Random Task.

Well...turned in the well used ol' Random Task due to several missing screws and Kershaw sent out today a new ZT0350.
Nice warranty service right there...

Thought I'd try something different.
