Aww sh&t.
It's terribly hard, I'd think, to moderate this place. What with the personalities, the strong individualist streak running through most of us. And the history. How does one follow Bill Martino, anyhow?
I'm very sorry to hear of your decision, though doubtless you've got your reasons. And while I agree that the charismatic leader idea should go, to remain what it is, the HI Forum needs to continue to be a charismatic place.
A place where yeah, we're nuts about sharp things ... but also about the right use of them, and the right production of them. Bill didn't just sell knives, he used selling knives to forward particular purposes ... purposes related to recognizing and rewarding high quality traditional craftsmanship, to promoting self-reliance among disadvantaged folks, fairness in dealings. Khuks themselves represent a centuries-old design cycle, and appreciating the design also means appreciating the incremental changes and refinements of generations of kamis. Finding value in generations of people, who are both like and unlike ourselves.
While it's rarely been explicit, all of those things have a strict relationship to honour, our personal honour. And it's been a subversive undercurrent within HI, from Bill's earliest dealings. It's been important to us, and has changed us.
While I think that Munk's right, that we need to dispense with the idea of a charismatic leader ... this puts the onus squarely back on us. If the forum is to be what it has, at its best, been ... it will be because we recognize and promote what's kept us here. Not just the knives, but what's behind the knives.
Thanks again Munk - see you 'round.
Tom.
