Turn Off The Red Light

With the exception of the folks that got banned recently and me getting jumped on(not by you) I must have been totally missing reading all the posts that had all the acrimony, only thing I've noticed lately is LESS posting overall, but I figured that was the whole limiting the subjects(which also was not by you)

Sad you feel you need to step down Munk. Some hellatious turnover of mods here huh? Dan, Munk, Yvsa, Howard. Damn! At least everybody is still around and didn't stompoff pissed.

I frankly don't understand this. But, I can only hope for the best. I hope someone will step up to help Ms.Y and Nasty.

Nasty and Yangdu have help right now- from all of us.
I left for a private family matter I must take care of-
Not bumps in the road here.
It is unneccesary for me to be a mod. The things we want we already have.
It's always been about us. This is our forum. We are busy making new old men.
Does anyone here really believe we need a Uncle Bill, or a Rusty, with the word 'mod' after their names to walk on?

We've got them and more all around us.
When there's trouble who in hell do you think took care of it these last 14 months? We did.

This is just my opinion, but I strongly suggest surrender of the idea of a charismatic leader, and the implementation of a tour of duty for mods.

The only thing I wonder about is why it took a week to turn on Nasty's red name, and about 30 seconds to turn off mine?

They probably had the switch lubed and ready for me. Geeze.

It's curious what brings people together, isn't it?

In our case .... kukris.

Knives are what they are. And to each of us they are important for different reasons.

Kukris brought us all here to begin with. To get questions answered, for the mere fascination of them, maybe to score a deal? And here we have stayed, not for the knives, but for the people. For each other.

Munk, thank you so much for all of your work and dedication to this place. You're part of the foundation around here, and always will be.

:D when I first saw the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be about brothels .....

I,m not going to say what I want to say . It is my way of late to say what I should say instead . I guess it comes from years of popping my cork off wih no way to get it back in the bottle .

Munk it was great to have you as a moderator .

Hey man, I respect your decision, but your moderating wisdom will be sorely missed.

I have'nt been here very long, but I always look forward to your insights and posts. I hope that you continue to post with the frequency that you have in the past.

I sense good things for HI in the future, lots of cool stuff down the road. You gotta stick around, you can't miss this!

Well, hell, munk, what I think I meant to say was that I think you were doing a fine job as moderator. I don't know or care who your detractors are/were. "Up their nose with a garden hose" as we used to say in the old neighborhood.

Munk, I hope you won't quit coming by the forum. I, for one, will try to moderate myself (a chore at times) so as to keep Nasty's job a bit simpler.

Stop by for a cup o' coffee if you're ever over this way.

A lot of stuff happened here that I don't understand but must respect. Your leaving is one of those. I will miss your leadership. Thank you for your time and effort.

Thanks for your tenor as moderator, Munk. Things often work out for the best.

I am not a big poster in the HI thread (i only own one 12 inch AK) , but a long term reader of the posts.

I always thought the HI forum was one of the clossest knit community in BF, so i don't understand well why so much grief should occur from beeing an active participant in the forum.

When i read posts i always envision myself the different filters the message goes thru during it's voyage between he/she who thinks it and he/she who reads it.

It all starts with an idea, already tainted by our own thoughts (i am a buddhist so forgive me for my vieuws) , then the information is processed from our tainted thoughts into a text version of our thoughts but with limited resources ( our writing can never express fully how we feel), this writting appears on a screen and another person reads the information. The already corrupted version of the primary thought is then processed by another persons also tainted brain.
This means we have a lot of barriers where information can change or be affected by incorrect information.

post from person A: thought-speech-written text-bladeforum- read text- interpretation of meaning of text- thought person B

How can a thought go thru 6 different filters and still fully retain it's message without any corruption along the way?

This is IMHO impossible so we should always remind us about these filters when we read and write postst in these fora.

So even when we think that we see something on the screen it doesn't neccesarilly means what the other person wan'ts it to be.

just my 2 cents.

munk, like most good people, you served when you were most needed, and did it as well as you possibly could. can't ask for more. as stated before, don't cut back on the postings now that you are back in the ranks.

well, don't leave the forum!

Agreed. I can understand how things change and our priorities need to change accordingly. Thanks for all your hard work and I sincerely DO hope you stay and hang around with us 'commoners'. ;) We'll find a way to deal with your loss as a mod, but it would be a very sad day to lose you and your wisdom. All the best.

There are many things feel like saying - but I won't.

I will express my respect & admiration for your loyalty & enthusiasm for this forum.

Any voluntary position of responsibility will come under fire. Sooner or later, it is inevitable one will ask - do I need this??

You have answered this question for yourself. You have done your best, as has been stated earlier in this thread.

In my book, you are a good man munk:thumbup:

"Lang mae yer lum reek !!"

Aww sh&t.

It's terribly hard, I'd think, to moderate this place. What with the personalities, the strong individualist streak running through most of us. And the history. How does one follow Bill Martino, anyhow?

I'm very sorry to hear of your decision, though doubtless you've got your reasons. And while I agree that the charismatic leader idea should go, to remain what it is, the HI Forum needs to continue to be a charismatic place.

A place where yeah, we're nuts about sharp things ... but also about the right use of them, and the right production of them. Bill didn't just sell knives, he used selling knives to forward particular purposes ... purposes related to recognizing and rewarding high quality traditional craftsmanship, to promoting self-reliance among disadvantaged folks, fairness in dealings. Khuks themselves represent a centuries-old design cycle, and appreciating the design also means appreciating the incremental changes and refinements of generations of kamis. Finding value in generations of people, who are both like and unlike ourselves.

While it's rarely been explicit, all of those things have a strict relationship to honour, our personal honour. And it's been a subversive undercurrent within HI, from Bill's earliest dealings. It's been important to us, and has changed us.

While I think that Munk's right, that we need to dispense with the idea of a charismatic leader ... this puts the onus squarely back on us. If the forum is to be what it has, at its best, been ... it will be because we recognize and promote what's kept us here. Not just the knives, but what's behind the knives.

Thanks again Munk - see you 'round.

Tom.

You're Munk. No apologies. We like the Munk, whether moderator or just a forumite. Thanks for doing a tough job. Look forward to your next thread.
Terry

Munk: Thanks for all of your help moderating. I have always been interested in reading your threads as well. Please keep on contributing.

Its a funny thing, I haven't been posting here as much lately; there seemed to be a shift in the forum when the posts got first changed to HI Cantina and the regular forum, and then we were more restricted in what we could say in either forum.

Seemed like it went from everybody who loved khuks and more important HI had a voice to say whatever we wanted and have meaningful dialogue to a bunch of bickering over what should be said and could be said.
