Turning old mower blades into a knife?

Why not just use the lawn blades as is, just put handles on them and use as a chopper? The steel would be too soft to be a good cutter.

and could we call you Karl Childers? "Some folks call it a sling blade; I call it a kaiser blade mmmmmmmhhmmmmmmhh," :D

Using a piece of junk steel for practice is not a bad idea I do not think. If you screw up a free or really cheap piece of junk steel you will be far less aggravated that if you screw up $20-?? worth of good steel and countless hours of work. Practice is always a good thing I think no matter what you are doing, get the feel for what you are doing before start spending the cash.

After all, wend you finish the first,
If you found out that knife making it’s not for you.
You will be glad for not spending any extra money
Or if you like, then order some more adequate and easy to work steel
And some tools.
just save your first

Well I have made a knife out of lawn mower blade when I started making knives, and for a first knife it's fine.
I annealed it in the BBQ and heat treated it the same way, all I needed was a pair of bellows.
If you like doing it buy good steel.

this was mine. My father in law has it now.

I've been using lawn mower blades and have had great success. I test each one before I start into a blade, however. I've started a blog about it at:
www.jasonprom.wordpress.com
This may help a bit.
I used some of Wayne Goddard's ideas to get started as I've only been at this again for a few months.
