This is an updated version of the Tutorial #10 I made a couple of years ago:
http://www.aescustomknives.com/docs/tutorial10.htm

In that one, I've used an anvil and a hammer. Since nowadays I'm using a hydraulic press, and I've been making a number of these type of knives lately, I thought I'd make a new tutorial, showing how these were done.

Welding one end of the cable.
I tighten it with wire so it stays as compact as posible.

Then I place about 10" of the cable inside the over, til it reaches 800C, in order to burn residues.

Then I place the cable inside a stainless pipe.

Then I weld the cable and the pipe together.

Then I place this inside the oven, again, til it reaches 800C.

nohammermarkscabledamascus10.jpg

Then, while the cable is elastic, I twist it, to make it very tight.

Then I cut the package and weld the other end.

These are the dies I've made to be able to press the blade and tang, while leaving the bolster untouched.

Here's the package at 1300C, positioned in place and ready to be pressed.

And here it is being pressed.

First pressing is done and the package looks like this.

Forging to shape.

Now it's time to get rid of the stainless enclosure.

Chalk drawing of the desired blade so I can cut the metal to shape.

Rough blade.

And finally, the ground blade (and 4 cable neckers), ready to be placed on acid.
For more info in how I do this, take a look here (different maker's mark, same exact process):

I am happy to see you post Ariel. It seems like it's been a long time or is it just me?
I love your work and very innovative designs.
Thanks for sharing!

Ariel, very cool to see some more of your work. That knife turned out really nice! The inlays on the handle are very cool.

One question, Is there ever any concern with a cable knife like this that it will de-laminate at some point? I assume the reason you press it inside the stainless pipe is to keep the cable in one piece during the pressing process. By the time your done is the cable completely fused or is it possible for a knife like this to separate if not done correctly. I'm just curious, this method of forging is pretty fascinating!

Ariel, Ive welded a lot of cable but Ive always said you do the nicest work with cable Ive ever seen..

As usual, very innovative and impressive final product. Been doing a bit of work in the canned cable blades and it turns out much better. Nice seeing you back on BF.

Thanks guys!

It's been a while indeed, didn't have the time to make a tutorial for ages.

Cable won't delaminate, it's SOLID :)

Pins are cable too, here's a picture!
