This is a tutorial of how to make one of these:

Get some scrap wood (I used locust, because I think it's pretty), mild steel, two ceramic magnets, and some pin stock (forgot it in the pic)
hpim1787.jpg

Line it up/drill two holes in the steel. Measure it to stand out from the wood somewhere near 1/8"
hpim1788.jpg

Match up the holes on the wood, again with the steel sticking out a little
hpim1790.jpg

Cut the wood into two pieces (one for each side) I also cut another piece without holes for the bottom

Epoxy and clamp it all together

Peen the pins, smooth the corners, make sure the top edges are clean and line up correctly (grind them to be equal)

Put a coating of your choice (I used wax) to help protect the wood and part of the steel.

Now you're done, with a nice wooden magnetic holder to help you grind!
One thing to watch out for is while the wood will stay pretty insulated, the pins can still get very hot, so if you're grinding heavy, don't hold the pins.

This was made to be like this: http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/product_info.php?products_id=700 except at about 1/10 of the price.

You're right about dunking it would be bad, but the wood would act as an insulator, so it really shouldn't get too hot. It will definitely help me with tapering tangs, because it's 5" long, so I'd have a lot of control, and they're fairly weak magnets, so it's not a big issue getting the blade off (I wasn't sure how hard it would be to get steel off of a 100lb magnet)

I do a fair bit of grinding after HT, that's why I like being able to dunk the whole assembly and keep everything cool.

Here is the one I use -

I put a strip of the paper that comes off of 10 packs of belts across it. I rarely grind on it, but will occasionally use it to knock off mill scale etc. I like it for holding some small blades in the vise.

Hey Cap!
What are the dimensions of that magnet? They weren't listed on HF's site...

You in the new house yet? And are you getting any of the pic messages or text messages I've been sending ya?

Matt - the magnet is around 3/4" wide by 5" long and about 2" tall from my memory. They have difference sizes, I'll grab it out of the shop tomorrow and have a look.

I am in the new house remodeling, we have to be out of our rental at the end of this month, so hopefully I have central air and a bathroom by then. I just hung insulation in the bathroom tonight and will install the new tub tomorrow. I haven't gotten any text messages or pictures - I do get texts on my phone, so something funny must be going on. Call me sometime this week if you have the time.

Oh, also to clarify, I just rip off a piece and stick it between whatever I'm working on, it's not glued or anything of the sort. I do occasionally set them on fire... but what else am I supposed to use that slack bucket for?

sorry about this question, i'm new to this so here goes.
what and how do you use this grinding magnet for?
again sorry about the stupid question
